3. Function of Kidneys
Removes wastes from blood
Regulates body's level of sodium, phosphorus, and
potassium
Keeps blood clean and chemically balanced
Regulates water fluid levels

4. Nephr/o
Nephrology = study of the kidneys
Nephrologist = physician who specializes in the
kidneys
Nephritis = inflammation of kidney(s)
Nephrectomy = removal of a kidney
Nephralgia = pain in the kidney
Nephromalacia = softening of the kidney

5. 2 Types of Renal Failure
Acute kidney injury
Chronic kidney disease

7. Acute Kidney Injury (AKI)
Abrupt loss of kidney function resulting in the un-
balance of electrolytes and the retention of nitroge-
nous waste products.
Symptoms include:
Decreased urine output
Fatigue
Fluid retention
Nausea

8. Treatment for AKI
Diuretics – to help balance the amount of fluids in the
body
Kayexalate – to control the potassium in the blood
Medications to restore blood calcium levels
Dialysis to remove toxins from the blood

9. Chronic Kidney Disease
Progressive loss of renal function over a period of
months or years.
Symptoms include:
Increased blood pressure
Lethargy
Fluid retention

10. Treatment for Chronic Kidney Disease
Blood pressure medications
Healthy diet/excercise
Iron replacement therapy for anemia
Diuretics to control fluid retention

11. Prevention of Kidney Disease
Control blood pressure
Watch for symptoms of anemia (fatigue)
Be aware of any changes in urine
Drink lots of water
Regular excercise
