Description of Ensemble
The coordinated ensemble I have created derives from emerging trends in
the fall 2012 season, as well as a very prominent look that has swept the wider
population as of late. A good place to start, my inspiration began with the grunge
look. It has been widely popular over the last year and one I have found bits and
pieces of my own style in. I took the grunge and boyish style and combined it with
chic trends that have appeared this fall. These include the fur vest and faux leather
pants/ leggings, paired with a basic three quarter length, off the shoulder top.
The consumer that would dressin an outfit like this is a middle-class female,
who is confident, classy and yet still edgy – sporting a knit beanie hat, a classic Louis
Vuitton speedy 30 purse and a pair of Ray Ban sunglasses. This outfit would be worn
on a sunny fall day, for a casual occasion such as running errands, meeting up with
friends for coffee or taking a stroll downtown. Overall, it is a weekend outfit. The
consumer would wear thisoutfit would be classified as an experiencer – someone
who is up to date on fashion trends and enjoys standing out to a certain extent.

9. History of the Iconic Ray-Ban Sunglasses
Ray-Bans have been the “it” pair of sunglasses as far back in time as the
1950’s. However, the idea behind their creation did not originate as a fashion
accessory for the mass market. Ray-Bans were manufactured by a company known
as Bausch & Lomb in the 1920’s as a solution to the problems pilots experienced
with sun-glare while flying, (Ray-Ban). This was the regular market Bausch & Lomb
had produced and targeted their products toward – the US military. By doing this,
the aviation sunglasses style had been created.
It wasn’t until 1936 that the glasses picked up speed within the larger public
following a massive sale on the product – soon after they took on the actual name
‘Ray-Ban.’ Celebrities and people of prominence in society were spotted everywhere
sporting them, such as John F Kennedy. With the company doing so well, Bausch &
Lomb introduced a new style -the classic Wayfarer – which also picked up speed in
the market. Like most product life cycles, Ray-Bans remained in the culmination
stage for a number of decades but eventually began to decline and fall out of
popularity. They were losing their excitement and intrigue – they were becoming
just another pair of sunglasses.
Realizing that the Ray-Bans were at their peak while appealing to the mass
market, they made a deal to incorporate the product into movies and TV shows in
the 1980’s. They appeared in movies like ‘Top Gun’ and ‘Risky Business’ with Tom
Cruise sporting the trendy brand, (Ray-Ban). This was the brands saving grace and
to this day, they still use this branding strategy to ensure sales stay at the top. Every
few years there is an introduction to a new variation of the classic styles through
different lens tints, lens shapes and silver and gold hardware. But for the most part
the sunglasses have remained true to their roots. Still to this day they are worn
avidly by the wider public and have a huge following in the celebrity community.
Nicole Ritchie and even political leader Barrack Obama have been seen sporting the
classic Ray-Ban styles.
High and Low Fashion Product Classification
The item of this ensemble I chose to compare at different price levels was the
faux fur vest since it is a piece trending at the moment and also a material that needs
to be executed very well. I chose a light brown faux fur cropped vest from Guess by
Marciano and a very similar faux fur cropped vest from Forever 21 in black. These
retailers are both very well known but at very different price levels. Marciano would
be considered a better level brand, however thisparticular garment is priced at
$78.00, therefore landing in the moderate price level. Marciano does mass produce
their apparel to an extent but there is still an exclusivity to the clothing as their
retail locations are harder to come across. Forever 21 as a brand, and in terms of
this garment, falls under the budget price umbrella with their vest amounting to
$35.80 – there is no exclusivity to their apparel.

Forever 21
Although the vests fall within different price categories, the fabric used to
construct them are very similar. The Marciano vest is made up of 70% acrylic, 30%
polyester, 100% polyester lining and also has a satin outer lining to finish the
garment off. The Forever 21 vest is 73% acrylic, 16% polyester, 11% modacrylic
and the lining is 100% polyester. Both vests are obviously faux fur so equally bare
the burden of achieving the look of a genuine fur product. Clearly, the Marciano vest
is much softer and the aesthetic appeal is much better in terms of the lining.
Seams on the Marciano vest are very well hidden – not the tiniest bit of
stitching can be found on the seams. When tugged on it is apparent they are tight,
well stitched and clean. In comparison, when tugged on, the forever 21 seams do not
feel as durable and the stretch is much more apparent. The seams did not fall apart
but the stitching is more noticeable, not as tight and effectively done. Both vests
weigh about the same, however the fits are quite different. Overall, the Marciano
vest is smaller and chic. While the Forever 21 vest fits much looser and is a larger fit
in every possible way. While wearing both vests, arm and upper rotation
movements are free and are not restricted by the garments.
On an aesthetic level, the Marciano vest is leaps and bounds beyond the
Forever 21 vest. The faux fur to the touch is noticeably nicer, softer and the
appearance is much realer. The Forever 21 vest is much shinier, making it look fake,
while the Marciano vest is much more subtle in colour and also integrated white and
grey strands – resembling real fur. The shape of the Marciano vest is much nicer as
well. It is shorter in length on the front of the bodice (one length all the way around
the body), whereas the Forever 21 vest is a bit longer and so is the hair length.
Overall, the real difference in the two garments comes down to the quality in the
manufacturing and the aesthetic appeal/ fashionable colours of the two vests.
