1. Who would be the
audience for your
media product?
Evaluation 4
2. Who is our audience?
• To discover the audience for our horror film we looked at other horror films
that are similar to ours, so for example the Ring, which is a 15 age rated
film. Because it is a horror film this means that it cannot be aimed at
anyone too young, especially due to the gore in our film. So, we decided
that our film was to be aimed at the minimum of 15 as it has young
actors, and is based around first love so a younger audience would find it
more appealing. Although older people may watch it our aim for the film is
too target 15-19 year old teenagers, mainly girls. This is because the main
character is a broken hearted girl, and her victims are also girls, so if females
watch our film they will be more afraid as it suits their lifestyle more than
males. Another reason for a young audience is that gore appeals more to
them as the older generation do not seem to watch horrors as much as
teenagers.
3. How are females represented?
• Our representation of females in our film is both good and bad, because
although Elizabeth is killing people, we do understand why and we
empathize with her. She is the most powerful character in our film, which
was quite ironic as the beginning of our film was set in 1912 when females
were seen as not important because males were the ones in
charge, however in our film the women is the one that is powerful and
strong which goes against the rules of the time. We did this because we
wanted to challenge what people knew, so we thought if we placed this
erratic character in our film it automatically gives the storyline a twist, as its
more about how women could be been, rather than how they actually
were.
4. How are males represented?
• In our film males are shown to be the ‘bad’ characters, for example
Elizabeth's husband that leaves her at the alter, this shows he’s not a
good guy as he has driven her to commit suicide. In the modern
years the boys are portrayed better as they try to protect their
girlfriends, however because of Elizabeth’s opinion they are all
bad, and this does rub of on the audience as the boys never seem to
be able to look after their girlfriends, for example, in the first scene
we see a couple walking through the woods, but the boyfriend
actually runs away when his girlfriend is being killed so this shows
the negative representation.
5. Audience profile
• Our audience would still be in education, probably A levels.
• Often socialize with friends
• Hobbies such as meals, cinema, theatre, reading
• Males prefer horrors including gore and violence
• Females prefer psychological horrors, but watch gore with friends as
a laugh.
The type of horror film that they would watch would be; The Ring
and Scream because they are both Teenage Horrors which focus on
the young characters in the movie. So, I decided to use imdb to find
out the ratings and which age preferred to watch the film…
6. The Ring
This graph shows that Females under
the age of 18 watched the film the
most. Which is good as this is our target
audience and if they watched this film
they are probably likely to watch ours
too. There was also high ratings for
under 18’s in general, so our age rating
works well as this age is shown to
watch more horrors than over 45’s who
had an average of 7.0 compared to 7.4
that females under 18 rated.
7. Scream
This graph shows that under 18’s
gave the film the highest
ratings, and mostly males.
So, although ours is initially aimed at
females, this shows that males are
likely to watch it. Although the
difference between our film and
Scream is that our main role is a
teenage girl, but the main role in
Scream are both girls and boys, so
boys would be likely to want to see
it more. The people that were less
likely to see this was females over
45, which shows that adults do not
enjoy horror films as much as
teenagers.
8. The Hole (2001)
This this graph we can see that once
again males under the age of 18 are
most likely to enjoy this film, this is
then followed by females under
18, which shows that are target
audience of 15-18 would definitely
be best for our film as this is the age
range that would enjoy our film the
most.
