1. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
Opening Sequence
When the film starts the Warner Bros
production logo comes on screen, however
it’s modified so that the background is black
and it looks like the logo is coloured with
dark stormy clouds, this makes the audience
feel uneasy and can also be used as an
action code as the darkness signifies that
something is going to happen. This is
encouraged by the dramatic music (score)
that slowly builds up, getting louder and
louder, creating tension.
At 15 seconds, a zoom shot is
used to go through the
production logo and to the
scene. The use of the zoom shot
makes the audience feel as if
they are moving to the scene
and therefore feel more
connected to the film. This can
create more of a sense of
unease as the audience may
feel as though they are there in the darkness.
At 20 seconds the music gets quieter and you see a snake appear, this
connotes that the snake may be dangerous, as the sudden quiet after the
loud music will make the audience feel on edge.
An over the shoulder tracking shot is then
used to follow the snake’s movements.
The use of these shots can be an enigma
code as the vagueness makes the
viewer wonder where the snake could
be going.
Ambient sounds of the snake hissing and
moving through the grass creates more of a sense of surrealism and helps the
viewer to feel as if they are there.
At 30 seconds in there is use of
asynchronous sounds of whispering, this
is another example of the enigma code
as it makes the viewers wonder where
the
whispering is coming from and what it
means. It also makes the audience feel
uncomfortable as the whispering is done
in a creepy tone which makes it almost sound like the hissing of a snake.
At 48 seconds the snake nears a statue and a tilt shot is then used to look up
at the statue. The statue is hooded and follows the enigma code as the
2. audience will want to know what the statue is of and the face under the
hood.
At 52 seconds, in the background of the shot you can see the title of the film.
A zoom shot is then used to get closer to the title so you can see it clearly.
When the title comes up the non-diegetic, dramatic theme tune of Harry
Potter starts playing and makes the audience feel adrenaline.
At 1.08 minutes a tilt shot is then used to go back down from the sky and
direct the camera at the scene bellow. As the camera gets closer to the
scene the music quietens, this is an action code as it signifies that something is
about to happen, ‘the silence before the storm’. An extreme wide shot is
used at this point to establish where the setting is.
Then at 1.17 seconds a light comes on in the house, which tells the audience
that something is in the house. A quick cut is then used to start the next scene
from inside the house.
