  8. 8. 8 Offshore Wind Energy key facts • There is now more than 430GW of installed wind energy capacity worldwide: approximately 418GW onshore and 12 GW offshore. • 3 GW of new offshore wind power capacity was connected to the grid during 2015 in Europe, a 108.3% increase over 2014. • 419 new turbines were erected in 2015 in Europe.

EMR Auction Results • LCoE for Offshore Wind farms is falling • The main reduction factor is larger wind turbines Good progress but: • The continuation of the costs reduction journey is dependent on sections of the supply chain which are less well established and are less compelled to invest in the longer-term future of offshore wind. • The current market conditions do not support further long term investment in technology development and supply chain industrialisation.   15. 15. 15 State of the art  Ocean Energy is still in its early stages of development and its contribution to global energy production is not highly significant yet.  The resource is abundant and well distributed around the world.  Technologies to harness ocean energy are not mature enough with high costs of energy in comparison to other sources.  Ocean energy will be an indispensable actor for a long-term clean energy mix, contributing to ensure a world-wide energy supply near the point of local use.  The participation of public bodies committed to a clean energy future is essential to help Ocean Energy to reach maturity 15

  21. 21. 21 Specialisation Wind Energy Supply Chain UK • 207 companies in the UK Supply Chain – see map • 43% of the lifetime cost of a UK wind farm is spent in the UK. • over 6800 people are directly employed today in offshore wind in the UK. • Job creation scenarios: - 15GW installed capacity by 2020 GVA £6.7bn supporting 150,000 jobs in total. - 8GW installed capacity by 2020 GVA £2.3bn supporting 50,000 jobs in total.

  25. 25. 25 TECNALIA- Catapult : joining forces • The challenges ahead are multidisciplinary and require knowledge, research facilities and vision. • Strong research and innovation organisations are needed to support offshore renewables. • ORE Catapult and TECNALIA have strong and complementary capabilities, together we will be able to support industry more efficiently. • There is potential for a hub on offshore renewables between UK and Spain. • Areas of collaboration: • Grid integration (HVDC) • Testing solutions • Leading Edge protection solutions for blades • We are working together in several EU funded projects on floating wind, cables, testing and reliability.
