5. EU Funds
Two distinct types:
Structural Funds (ESF and ERDF)
Managed by national Governments – have no
European co-operation
Transnational Funds
Involve partnership with another organisation in
another EU Member State or some wider European
goal
6. • Budgets are set for the European Union (EU)
for periods of 7 years
• Current budget period runs between 2007
and 2013 - €864 billion/£720 billion
• Structural Funds are on the decline in the
UK, we know that the budgets for
transnational funds are likely to increase
• Transnational funding opportunities exist for
a wide range of activities linked to
Locality member services

8. Adding a European dimension to your
existing service delivery can:
• open up a whole new world of funding programmes, grants and delivery options
for your organisation
• offer some continuity of service delivery with added European value, maximise
European funds into an area and provide additional opportunities to local people
and businesses that they would not access otherwise;
• identify new solutions, services and innovation for the organisations involved;
• directly involve local people and organisations in the activities of the EU and its
funding programmes which can bring a benefit to their lives;
• raise your profile at the European level and enable you to have your voice heard
and possibly enable you to influence policy which affects you and your target
group;
• avoid breakdown in community relations or the potential for social unrest in a
period of economic downturn through increased contact with local residents and
people from other communities across the EU
• enable your organisation and your communities to see Europe a something that
is relevant to them and of significant value

14. Be ready for the future
The new funding programmes promise to be even more accessible and bigger
than they are now, so now is the time to start to engage in the process.
You can do this by:
- finding out what is available now in your work area;
- identifying European partners;
- applying for and running a small project now, to be ready to up scale your
European provision when the new programmes come into operation.
With the right level of interest and commitment you could start to see
European programmes really change how your organisation works and bring
significant, life changing opportunities to the people in your area.
