6. The English Colonies- Land and Labor The New England Colonies gave land to the towns created by the men who grouped together as a corporate group. This (In my opinion) was better than the Chesapeake colonies who just gave out land to individuals who had wealthy connections. Being that they could not afford slaves or servants, they relied upon the labor of their sons and daughters. By age 10, the boys were able to work with their fathers in the fields.

7. The English Colonies- Family Life The labor was divided into male and female tasks and responsibilities. Men did the heavy work such as constructing, tending to livestock, and harvesting the crops. Women maintained the household duties such as caring for children, preparing and preserving foods, making clothing, or working in the garden. Marriage was viewed as romantic as well as economic. The husband and wife were to be temperamentally and financially compatible and capable of working together as a loving couple as well as responsible parents for their children.
