Mozilla Open Badges are a web standard for capturing and communicating skills through digital badges. Open badges can be earned for both formal qualifications and informal learning experiences. The badges are owned by the user, can be created and issued by anyone, and stored in a portable backpack that learners can share online. Over 300,000 badges have been issued by 2,000 issuers to 52,395 backpacks since 2012, demonstrating significant growth in adoption. Open badges are being used across education and industry to motivate learning and recognize a wide range of accomplishments.
