Pukkelpop 25

In 1985 komen de Humanistische Jongeren uit
Leopoldsburg, een vrijzinnige jeugdvereniging
voor jongeren met een kritische en open geest,
samen in clubhuis De Pukkel. Geïnspireerd door
de tijdsgeest en voorbeelden als Torhout/
Werchter en het Seaside festival, stampen ze
als een van hun activiteiten een festival uit
de grond: Pukkelpop is geboren. Een aantal
organisatoren van toen vormen nog steeds
het leidende en overkoepelende Pukkelpop-
team en ook nu nog steunt Pukkelpop voor
een belangrijk deel op de medewerkers op
de Humanistische Jongeren Leopoldsburg.
Het eerste Pukkelpopfestival in 1985 vond
plaats op het voetbalterrein van Heppen,
bij Leopoldsburg. Uit voorzorg tellen enkele
ouders en leden hun spaarcentjes zodat ze
borg kunnen staan voor eventuele verliezen.
Onnodig zou blijken: het festival van de
zwartjassen — zoals het werd genoemd —
lokte 2.500 alternatievelingen die luisterden
naar o.a. Front 242, Anne Clark en The Neon
Judgement. In 1986 blijkt de affiche met daarop
Arno, Virgin Prunes en Yellowman alweer een
voltreffer. Een jaar later graaft Pukkelpop
nog dieper underground met acts als Sonic
Youth, Big Black en Wire. Opnieuw met succes.
Drie keer zou Pukkelpop in Heppen plaatsvinden
op de nationale feestdag en dit onder het
motto ‘Op 21 juli blijf je best in België’. Toch
dringen zich in 1988 een aantal wijzigingen
op. Om het samenstellen van een internationale
affiche te vergemakkelijken besluiten de
organisatoren samen met Herman Schueremans
het festival te verschuiven naar eind augustus.
Dit maakt het mogelijk Pukkelpop te linken
aan het Engelse Reading festival, waardoor
het voor artiesten interessanter wordt af te
zakken naar de Limburgse festivalweide. De
verandering van datum en de op dat moment al aan
de gang zijnde voetbalcompetitie verplichten
de organisatoren ook een alternatief te
zoeken voor het Heppense voetbalterrein. Dit
alternatief wordt gevonden op 6 km van de
oorspronkelijke site: Pukkelpop verhuist naar
Sanicole, een vliegveld op militair domein
tussen Leopoldsburg en Hechtel.
Pukkelpop noteert in 1988 8.000 bezoekers met
op de affiche o.a. Ramones, The Jesus and Mary
Chain en The Triffids.
In 1989 moet Pukkelpop op de valreep afgebla-
zen worden. Oorzaak zijn headliners New Order
en The Sugarcubes. Het boekingskantoor van
New Order verslikt zich danig in haar tour-
planning en The Sugarcubes (de voormalige band
van Björk) blaast zelfs de hele Europese tour-
nee af. Interessante alternatieven zijn niet
tijdig voorhanden en dus wordt het hele festi-
valgebeuren vijf weken voor aanvang afgelast.
In 1990 staat Pukkelpop er sterker dan ooit
met mooie namen als Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds,
Rollins Band, Faith No More en The Cramps.
In de jaren ‘80 ontwikkelt Pukkelpop zich. De
kernstructuur van de organisatie wordt ge-
vormd op basis van vooral vrijwilligerswerk en
daarbovenop weet het festival door de jaren
heen heel wat kennis en ervaring te vergaren.
Centraal staat het streven naar vernieuwing
en kwaliteit, en een respectvolle omgang met
artiesten, publiek en medewerkers.
Gedurende deze eerste vijf jaar is ook de
spanning te voelen: de wereld schreeuwt om
politieke verandering en ook muzikaal beweegt
het als nooit tevoren. De eerste house- en
technoplaten worden geproducet, heel wat be-
langrijke hiphopalbums verschijnen en indie
rock staat klaar om uit de underground te
springen.

In 1985 the members of the Humanistische
Jongeren (Humanist Youth) from Leopoldsburg,
a freethinking youth organization for young
people with an open and critical mind, met
at their clubhouse De Pukkel (The Pimple) to
discuss the activities of the coming months.
Inspired by the spirit of the times and by
Torhout/Werchter and the Seaside Festival
they decided to organize an alternative music
festival. Pukkelpop was born. Today a large
number of the original organizers still belong
to the Pukkelpop organizing and coordinating
team. Each year Pukkelpop can rely on the
support and cooperation of all the members and
sympathizers of Humanist Youth Leopoldsburg.
In 1985 the first Pukkelpop concert was
organized on the Heppen football pitch (Heppen
is a small hamlet in Leopoldsburg). In order
to be able to cover possible losses, lots of
HJ members, or rather their parents, started
counting their savings and putting money aside.
But they needn’t have worried: 2,500 alternative
youngsters showed up at the festival of the
black coats - as it was called by the locals -
to listen to Front 242, Anne Clark, The Neon
Judgement and others. Pukkelpop 1986 turned
out to be even more successful with bands like
Arno, Virgin Prunes and Yellowman. One year
later Pukkelpop went deeper underground when
they invited Sonic Youth, Big Black and Wire.
Another success!
For three years Pukkelpop was held in Heppen on
the national holiday, under the motto: “On the
21st of July, you should stay in Belgium”. Yet
a number of changes would impose themselves in
1988. In order to facilitate the presentation
of an international bill, the organisers
decide, together with Herman Schueremans, to
move the festival to the end of August. This
allows Pukkelpop to be linked to the English
Reading Festival, making it more interesting
for artists to slip down to the festival grounds
in Limburg. The change in the date and the
fact that the football season would already
have started by then, force the organisers
to produce an alternative for the football
field in Heppen. The alternative is found
6km from the original festival site: Pukkelpop
moves to Sanicole, a military air base between
Leopoldsburg and Hechtel.
In 1988 Pukkelpop records 8.000 visitors. The
bill includes Ramones, The Jesus and Mary Chain
and The Triffids.
In 1989 Pukkelpop has to be cancelled at the last
minute. The reasons are the late cancellations
of headliners New order and The Sugarcubes.
There are no interesting alternatives available,
so the entire festival is cancelled five weeks
in advance. In 1990 Pukkelpop is back in full
force with names like Nick Cave & The Bad
Seeds, Rollins Band, Faith No More and The
Cramps.
In five years’ time (1985-1990) the Pukkelpop
team had acquired a lot of knowledge and
experience and the festival had slowly gained
international recognition. The basic structure
of the organization was founded on the work of
large numbers of volunteers. Constant renewal,
quality improvement and respectful contact
with artists, audience and co-operators became
the basis of the Pukkelpop policy.
During these first five years, you can really
feel the tension: the whole world cries out
for political change and musically speaking
things are happening like never before. There’s
the production of the first house and techno
records, the release of many major hiphop
albums and indie rock is ready to jump out of
the underground and take centre stage.

“Die van DAF hadden er niks anders op
gevonden dan een playbackshow neer
te zetten (lacht). Nu wordt dat in
sommige kringen enigszins aanvaard,
maar in die tijd! Toen kon dat echt
niet op een affiche waar het live aspect
hoog in het vaandel gedragen werd.
Het publiek nam dat dan ook niet en
men heeft de band toen letterlijk van
het podium gekegeld met gras, modder,
alles wat men maar vond eigenlijk. Als
je dat van op afstand bekeek dan leek
het net een wervelstorm van gras en
modder, en zag je op de achtergrond
de schim van het podium. Die gasten
van DAF zijn een paar jaar geleden
(2003) teruggekomen op Pukkelpop en
ja, toen werden ze gek genoeg op
handen gedragen. Want tegenwoordig
kan het wel. Het live van nu is niet
meer het live van toen. Fijn om te
zien hoe dat allemaal geëvolueerd is.“

show? Well, those guys simply decided

(laughs). Nowadays that kind of thing
is acceptable in some circles, but
back then! In those days it was just
unthinkable for a festival where the
live aspect is of paramount importance.
The audience wouldn’t stand for it
and quite literally blasted the band
off stage with grass, mud, anything
they could lay their hands on really.
Looking at it from a distance, it was
like a whirlwind of grass and mud
with the blur of the stage in the
background. The guys of DAF came back
to Pukkelpop a few years ago (2003),
and, funnily enough, the crowd loved
them. Because that kind of thing has
become possible now. What people
consider live today is not the same
as they did back then. It’s nice to
see how everything has evolved.”

‘Here we are now, entertain us’, howls Kurt Cobain
in the early hours of Pukkelpop 1991. Would he
have known then that the whole world would be
belting out these words a couple of months later?
That world was changing drastically. The Berlin
Wall had collapsed; Yugoslavia and the Soviet
Union were on the brink of disintegration. And
1991 became a turning point in music too. The
Pukkelpop bills from 1991 tot 1994 perfectly
reflect the musical evolution: first Nirvana, then
Rage Against The Machine, Public Enemy and finally
Underworld. The early ‘90s were exciting musical
years during which the blinkers finally came off.
The number of visitors also indicates that what
was still labelled ‘underground’ in the 80s, was
now being appreciated by more than just a few
‘black coats’. From 17.000 visitors in 1991 to
47.000 in 1994.
In this period Pukkelpop’s keyword was change. In
1991 Pukkelpop moves to a site at Kinderboerderij
in Kiewit, close to Hasselt. However, the grounds
were badly accessible and so, one year later,
Pukkelpop finally strikes down on the grounds
along the Kempische Steenweg, again in Kiewit.
But also the fact of having only one stage is
questioned. What to do with so many great bands
and so little space? In 1993 the Marquee was
introduced, and with success! Quasi new bands
like Verve, Tool, The Goats and Stone Temple
Pilots played legendary sets in the tent that
stood behind the Main Stage.
And while dance music only seemed to be developing
inside clubs, Pukkelpop decided in 1994 to
erect the Dance Hall with acts like Tekton Motor
Corporation and headliner Underworld. The tent
was an instant hit. Once again, Pukkelpop set
the trend because so far no other summer festival
had ever combined guitars and dance music.
‘Here we are now, entertain us’, schreeuwt Kurt

waren spannende muzikale tijden en de oogkleppen
vielen een voor een af.
Ook in de bezoekersaantallen wordt duidelijk
dat wat eind jaren ’80 nog als ‘underground’
wordt bestempeld, nu gesmaakt wordt door meer
dan enkel ‘zwartjassen’. Van 17.000 bezoekers in
1991 tot 47.000 in 1994.
Verandering lijkt wel het sleutelwoord in deze
periode. Pukkelpop verhuist in 1991 naar een
terrein aan de Kinderboerderij in Kiewit bij
Hasselt. De weide bleek slecht bereikbaar en
een jaar later landt Pukkelpop definitief op de
weides langs de Kempische Steenweg in Kiewit.
Maar ook het gegeven van maar één podium wordt
in vraag gesteld. Wat met zoveel mooie bands en
zo weinig plaats? In 1993 deed de Marquee haar
intrede en met succes! Quasi nieuwe bands als
Verve, Tool, The Goats en Stone Temple Pilots
speelden legendarische sets in de tent die toen
nog achter de Main Stage lag.
En terwijl dancemuziek zich enkel en alleen in
clubs leek te ontplooien, besliste Pukkelpop in
1994 om de Dance Hall in het leven te roepen
met onder andere Tekton Motor Corporation en
headliner Underworld. De tent was meteen een
schot in de roos. Pukkelpop zette opnieuw de
trend, want voor zover bekend combineerde geen
enkel zomerfestival gitaren met dance.

“Pukkelpop? Sure I know that name.
It must’ve been with Nirvana, in the early
nineties. One of my first festivals ever!
It was August 1991 and it was like stepping
into another dimension. Nirvana was opening
for bands like Ride, Sonic Youth and the
Ramones. We had to play at like eleven in
the morning and we thought: who’s going to
see a gig that early in the morning? Once we
got on stage we saw that half the audience
was already drunk. What the fuck! There
were like thirty thousand people there, it
was the biggest thing I’d ever done. I was
really nervous to begin with, but then we
finished at about twelve o’clock and started
walking around. And I thought: hey, this is
actually quite relaxed! Having the whole day
off, drinking beer and seeing the Ramones!
The sun’s going down, you’ve had a few
beers, the main act is giving it all they’ve
got: at that moment I thought it was the
best day of my life, haha!”

Hasselt, Belgium – “Pukkelpop. Another festival.
This one looks as big as Reading, with an even
stranger bill. The Pogues and The Ramones are
the big stars here. Dinosaur Jr. again. Black
Francis too. Nirvana had to open the show at
11 am. Got there just in time to catch the
last half of Nirvana’s set. They are getting
progressively wilder as the tour goes on, and
all this at 11 in the morning! The sight of Kurt
straddling Chris and spinning into oblivion was
priceless. Kim, Thurston and I watched from
the photo pit in awe. A lot of hanging out
went on today, bolstered by the most alcohol
I’ve seen backstage yet. Sonic Youth open
with ‘Schizophrenia’ and it’s just massive and
majestic. A perfect set follows as I keep the
camera a-rollin’. The crowd was into it, and it
showed. During ‘Kool Thing’, Kurt danced with
his friend Ian on stage, like a spaz on Rilatin.”

In 1995, Pukkelpop celebrated its tenth
anniversary and – for the first time over a
period of two days – presented one of its most
interesting line-ups so far. Foo Fighters, for
instance, played their very first European show
at Pukkelpop. The band had never even performed
at a festival before. Neil Young was the closing
act on the first evening, with Pearl Jam as his
backing band, and you could witness the Belgian
premieres of The Prodigy and The Chemical
Brothers. A young Radiohead was the headliner in
the Marquee and Smashing Pumpkins, Beck, Kyuss,
Shellac and Hole were also part of this legendary
line-up.
A year later, the organisation conjured up two
new stages. The Club was the place to be for new,
interesting bands. Over the years, you could
see artists such as Elliott Smith, Coldplay, Bloc
Party, Sigur Rós and The Killers on the verge of
their massive breakthrough. The greatest names
in the punk and hardcore scene tore across the
Skate Stage, to which hip hop and metal would
also find their way. Next to the stage, you could
even witness the erection of an actual skate
park.
In 1997, the Boiler Room pitched its tent in
Kiewit for the first time. From the fluorescent
circus of Temple Decor in the early days to the
monumental light show of later years; Pukkelpop
has done its very best to turn the Boiler Room
into the festival’s partying epicentre. Fatboy
Slim, Basement Jaxx, Dave Clarke, Richie Hawtin,
Green Velvet, Crookers, Andy C, Roni Size and
Boys Noize. The best DJs of the moment have all
been here.
Since the same year, each edition has invested
heavily to catapult Pukkelpop-goers into a whole
other world. And not only where the music is
concerned! The sideshows have expanded with
absurd street theatre performances, amazing
stunts, acrobatic and humorous circus acts and
experimental installations.
In 1995 viert Pukkelpop zijn tiende verjaardag
en brengt het – voor het eerst verspreid over
twee dagen – een van zijn interessantste affiches
ooit. De Foo Fighters maken hun Europees debuut
op Pukkelpop. Het is ook meteen hun vuurdoop op
een festival. Neil Young sloot de eerste avond
af met Pearl Jam als backing band en je kon er
de Belgische premières meemaken van The Prodigy
en The Chemical Brothers. Het jonge Radiohead
was headliner in de Marquee en ook Smashing
Pumpkins, Beck, Kyuss, Shellac en Hole stonden
op deze legendarische affiche.
Een jaar later tovert de organisatie opnieuw
twee extra podia tevoorschijn. In de Club kan je
terecht voor de nieuwe interessante namen. Over
de jaren heen zie je er artiesten als Elliott

Killers op de rand van hun doorbraak. Op de Skate
Stage scheuren de strafste namen uit de punk- en
hardcorewereld voorbij, maar ook hiphop en metal
vinden er hun weg. Een heus skatepark verrijst
in de schaduw van het podium.
In 1997 staat de Boiler Room voor het eerst in
Kiewit. Van het fluorescerende circus van Temple
Decor in de beginjaren tot de enorme lichtshow
van de laatste jaren; Pukkelpop slooft zich uit
om van de Boiler Room het feestepicentrum van
het festival te maken. Fatboy Slim, Basement
Jaxx, Dave Clarke, Richie Hawtin, Green Velvet,
Crookers, Andy C, Roni Size en Boys Noize. De
beste dj’s van het moment staan er.
Vanaf 1997 wordt er elke editie zwaar
geïnvesteerd om de Pukkelpopgangers in een
geheel andere wereld te katapulteren. Niet
enkel muzikaal. Het randgebeuren breidt uit met
absurd straattheater, verbazingwekkende stunts,
acrobatische en humoristische circusacts en
experimentele installaties.

Het was ook meteen hun eerste
concert in Europa. In 2009
bezorgt Dave Grohl Pukkelpop
een nieuwe wereldpremière:
Them Crooked Vultures spelen er

In 1996 stapt bassist en zanger Stef
Kamil Carlens uit de groep om zich
volledig op andere projecten te
storten. In de Marquee speelt hij zijn
allerlaatste dEUS-show.

(1996) speelde ook Sebadoh, de band
van Lou Barlow, waar ik grote fan van
was. Ik overhandigde hem een cassette
van onze laatste nieuwe cd ‘In a bar
under the sea’ en hij vroeg me of ik
toevallig een cd had! De King of Lo-
Fi vraagt aan mij of ik geen cd heb
(lacht). Tijdens zijn set sloeg hij
aan het improviseren en droeg hij een
liedje op aan onze cassette. (zingend)
‘Thank you for the tape!’ Als 24-jarige
was ik daar natuurlijk heel blij mee.”
Tom Barman (dEUS): “1994 was definitely
a memorable year for us. It was pure
magic. It was the first time we asked
each other: ‘What the hell is this?’
We were completely overwhelmed by the
audience! My favourite picture from
that period – it was also used for the
re-issue of ‘Worst Case Scenario’ – was

In 1996, bassist and singer Stef Kamil

(1996) Sebadoh, Lou Barlow’s band,
of which I was a huge fan, were also
playing. I handed him a tape of our
last album ‘In a bar under the sea’
and he asked me whether I didn’t happen
to have a CD. The King of Lo-Fi asking
me whether I didn’t have a CD (laughs).
He started improvising during his
set and dedicated a song to our tape
(starts singing) ‘Thank you for the
tape!’ As a 24-year-old, that really
made me very happy.”

In 2004 speelt dEUS zijn enige Main Stage-optreden
op Pukkelpop. De groep is niet tevreden en neemt in
een sterk gewijzigde bezetting revanche in 2009.
dEUS dubbelt in zijn geliefde Marquee. Zaterdagavond
met een strakke dEUS-set, de avond ervoor met een
indrukwekkend pak gasten: De Jeugd Van Tegenwoordig
op ‘Suds & Soda’, Gary Lightbody (Snow Patrol) zingt
‘HotelLounge’ mee en Karin Dreijer Andersson (The
Knife, Fever Ray) levert een indrukwekkende bijdrage
op ‘Slow’.
Tom Barman (dEUS): “Pukkelpop is hét festival waar
zoiets kan. Je kan er onverwachte dingen doen en die
toch nog – bij wijze van spreken – omarmen. Je kan
het boeiend houden.”
In 2004, dEUS played its only Main Stage show at
Pukkelpop. Unsatisfied with the result, the band
got its own back with a heavily changed line-up in
2009. dEUS performed a double bill in its beloved
Marquee. Saturday night brought a tight dEUS-set,
while the night before produced an impressive list
of guests: De Jeugd Van Tegenwoordig on ‘Suds &
Soda’, Gary Lightbody (Snow Patrol) joined in to sing
‘HotelLounge’ and Karin Dreijer Andersson (The Knife,
Fever Ray) delivered an impressive contribution on
‘Slow’.

Dear Pukkelpop,
Congratulations you old bastard! I’ll never forget my first time playing
Pukkelpop. It was with Quicksand, way back in 1994. Driving through the
muddy fields, the endless lines of people, a city of tents in the would-be
shadow of that towering main stage all remain chiseled in my mind. I think
Pavement were first on the main stage and were playing as we rolled up. We
were in a tented stage billed right before The Jesus Lizard. Blessed with
torrential rain we had a full house and a great show that night.
My next visit to Pukkelpop was with Rival Schools in 2002. There were
loads of great bands and great friends. We shared the stage with Trail Of
Dead, Hot Water Music, The Breeders, an epic line-up. I remember strolling
backstage into Jane’s Addiction’s dressing room as they were jamming to
warm up for their set, pretty special for me.
Having returned again in 2009 with a reformed Rival Schools I was
reminded why we got back together in the first place, to do stuff like
play Pukkelpop, seeing great bands, being in the crowd, eating food and
drinking beer. Thank you for having me there for three of your amazing
25 years, it’s been a great pleasure and an honour indeed.

It’s hard to believe the zit-faced teen is now

Een nieuw millennium voor de wereld, een nieuw
decennium voor Pukkelpop.
De periode 2001-2009 is er een van constante
groei voor het festival. Een stijgende lijn op
alle gebieden. Meer bezoekers (van 110.000 naar
180.000)! Meer kampeerders (van 32.000 naar
54.000)! Meer acts (van 140 naar +200)! Meer
podia (8 in totaal)! Het is helemaal eigen aan
een tijd die aan de snelheid van een straaljager
verandert.
Pukkelpop is een speeltuin voor jongeren
die op vele fronten op zoek zijn: op zoek
naar zichzelf, op zoek naar hun muzikale
identiteit. Pukkelpop bepaalt hun ‘cool’ of
fungeert als richtingaanwijzer. De speurtocht
op het internet naar nieuwe muzikale impulsen
krijgt op Pukkelpop letterlijk een gezicht. De
democratisering van de muziek zet zich door.
Vanaf 2001 komt er een extra festivaldag bij
en enkele nieuwe tenten doen hun intrede.
Zo verschijnt - na enkele try-outs met een
Experimental Stage - de Chateau op het
terrein: een donkere tent die de nieuwste
muziekstromingen in de marge een plek geeft.
In 2004 bestaat de samenwerking tussen
Pukkelpop en het Zuid-Afrikaanse Oppikoppi 5
jaar en wordt de Wablief?!-tent voor het eerst
geïntroduceerd. Ondere andere Soulwax, Das
Pop, Zita Swoon, Millionaire, Stijn en Flip
Kowlier trekken naar het Oppikoppifestival.
De Zuid-Afrikanen sturen Max Normal, Boo! en
Godezza. De Wablief?!-tent wordt later eveneens
de thuishaven voor de betere stand-up comedy.
En Petit Bazar is sinds 2008 een plek om te
ontsnappen aan de werkelijkheid, een wondere
wereld met gekarteld randje waar bijna alles
kan en mag.
Pukkelpop groeit uit tot een professioneel,
maar nog steeds onafhankelijk festival dat
zijn typische eigenzinnigheid bewaart. Volgens
heel wat internationale artiesten en topagents
behoort het tot een van de betere in Europa,
zelfs in de wereld. Ook vandaag nog zijn de
vrijwilligers van de Humanistische Jongeren van
Leopoldsburg de drijvende kracht achter het
festival. Pukkelpop is leren en doorgeven. Nieuwe
generaties, samen met de Pukkelpopveteranen en
andere professionals. Een machtige samenwerking
die de sleutelformule vormt voor het succes
van het festival. Denk aan zowel de natste
editie in 2003 als aan de heetste festivaldag
in 2009 (38,2°C). Deze omstandigheden dwingen
de Pukkelpopmedewerkers hun skills optimaal te
benutten en verder te ontwikkelen. Pukkelpop
is geen herhalingsoefening. Het kan steeds
beter en het wordt ook steeds beter.
Zo trotseert in 2009 een recordaantal
festivalbezoekers de weide.
Met 189.000 banen ze zich een eigenwijze weg
tussen de acht verschillende Pukkelpoppodia.
Nog nooit waren er zoveel bezoekers, uit meer
dan zestig verschillende landen.
En nooit eerder ontving Pukkelpop zoveel
kampeerders.
Dit is Pukkelpop op zijn grootst, maar ook op
zijn mooist!
A new millennium for the world, a new decade
for Pukkelpop.
The years between 2001 and 2009 are a period
of constant expansion for the festival. An up-
ward trend on all levels. More visitors (from
110,000 to 180,000)! More campers (from 32,000
to 54,000)! More acts (from 140 to over 200)!
More stages (8 in all)! It’s all part of the
sign o’ the times, which are changing at jet
speed.
On many fronts, Pukkelpop is a playground for
young people in search of themselves, in search
of their musical identity. Pukkelpop determines
their cool or acts as a signpost. Internet
searches for new musical impulses are given an
actual face at Pukkelpop. The democratic trend
in music continues.
From 2001 on, an extra day is added to the
festival and a couple of new tents appear.
One of these is the Chateau, erected after
a couple of try-outs with an Experimental Stage.
A darkened tent hosting the latest discoveries
in obscure musical trends.
In 2004, Pukkelpop and the South African
Oppikoppi Festival celebrate 5 years of
collaboration with the introduction of the
Wablief?!-tent. Artists such as Soulwax, Das
Pop, Zita Swoon, Millionaire, Stijn and

Flip Kowlier make a trip to South Africa. The
Oppikoppi Festival sends out Max Normal, Boo!
and Godezza. In later years, the Wablief?!-
tent becomes the place for the finest stand-up
comedy.
Petit Bazar, on the other hand, has been a
place to escape reality since 2008, a wonderful
world with a jagged edged where almost anything
is possible.
Pukkelpop has become a professional festival
but has always remained independent and true
to its own way of doing things. According to
many international artists and top agents, it
is one of the best festivals in Europe, and
even in the world. To this day, the volunteers
of the Humanistic Youth of Leopoldsburg con-
stitute the driving force behind the festival.
Pukkelpop means learning things and passing
them on. New generations, alongside Pukkelpop
veterans and other professionals: a powerful
collaboration, which is the key to the fes-
tival’s success. Consider the wettest edition
in 2003 and the hottest festival day in 2009
(38.2°C). Circumstances such as these compel
the Pukkelpop staff to maximize and further
develop their skills. The things that could be
better keep getting better. This is Pukkelpop
at its largest, but also at its best!
In 2009 a record number of music lovers visits
the festival grounds. 189,000 festival-goers
single-mindedly follow their own Pukkelpop
route that leads them to all of the 8 stages.
Never before have there been so many visitors,
from more than sixty countries. Never before
has there been such a large number of campers
at Pukkelpop.

Prodigy. Pukkelpop becomes a three-day festival and, for the first time,the Pukkelpop line-up has more than 100
artists. On day 1, the HipHop/Skate Stage

Frank Black rondsnorrend op het festivalterrein. Mr. Black krijgt
een rondleiding van Luc Janssen. Hij drong er op aan zelf achter
het stuur te zitten, ook al droeg hij de klompen die zijn broer
Errol (op de achterbank) de dag voordien voor hem gekocht had in
Amsterdam.

him wearing wooden clogs, which his brother Errol (sitting in the

Tijdens zijn zomertour van 2006 liet Beck zich op het podium
vergezellen door een handvol poppenspelers. Al vóór het begin
van het optreden voerden de poppen hun eigen show op op de
weide. Het resultaat daarvan werd gefilmd en later op het
podium geprojecteerd.
For his 2006 summer tour, Beck was joined on stage by a handful
of puppeteers. Before the actual performance began, the puppets
had already staged their own show among the people in the
crowd. The result was filmed and projected on stage later on.

walletjes van Kiewit kon de festivalbezoeker onder meer gratis aanschuiven
bij een pittige peepshow of zich onder handen laten nemen door een
dwergprostituee gespecialiseerd in ‘kleine intimiteiten’.

In Kiewit’s quarter of ill repute, festival visitors could queue up for a
spicy peepshow or undergo the treatment of a dwarf prostitute specialised
in ‘small intimacies’.HH

world. Our dressing rooms are like
houses with art deco and antique gear,
and replete with paintings. That doesn’t
happen anywhere in the world, not even
in your real house!”

Headliners: Metallica, Sigur Rós and The
Killers. The Skate Stage makes way for
The Shelter. It is the first time that an
edition of Pukkelpop has more than 150.000
visitors. In 2008, Pukkelpop’s 1.500.000th
visitor passes through the festival gates.

“Pukkelpop is voor ons het allerbelangrijkste festival. Het
heeft ons altijd gesteund in de ontwikkeling van de band. De
allereerste Nite Versions-show was op Pukkelpop. Iedereen vroeg
zich af wat die rockband in de Dance Hall ging doen? Er is geen
enkel festival dat dit soort try-outs zou toelaten. Het zou ook
nergens anders passen. Pukkelpop is het festival dat ons geduwd
heeft in de richting waar we heen wilden. Het heeft sowieso een
affiche die muzikaal altijd de limieten pusht.
Als we zelf niet spelen, gaan we gewoon als bezoeker. Zo heb ik
in 2006 een kijkje kunnen nemen in de piramide van Daft Punk. Ik
ga niet uit de biecht klappen, maar het was zeker geen iPod die
daar lag. (lacht)”
“For us, Pukkelpop is the most important festival. It has always
been supportive towards the evolution of the band. The very
first Nite Versions show was at Pukkelpop. Everybody was asking
themselves what this rock band was doing in the Dance Hall. No
other festival would go along with this kind of try-outs. And
besides, it wouldn’t fit anywhere else. Pukkelpop is the festival
that pushed us in the direction we wanted to go. And they
always have a line-up that pushes musical boundaries. If we’re
not playing ourselves, we simply go as visitors. In 2006, for
instance, I was able to sneak a peek under Daft Punk’s pyramid.
I’m not going to give anything away, but I didn’t exactly see an
iPod there. (laughs)”

“This festival has the best line-up of
any festival I have seen this year! It
is unbelievably good. You have Eagles of
Death Metal, Bill Callahan, Placebo, The
Ting Tings, Kraftwerk and the fabulous
Belgian band dEUS is playing tonight.
I can not wait to see them!”

“The first time I played the festival in 1996 I was used to
performing in small clubs. Pukkelpop was the first time I
played a bigger stage. I remember, when dance music was first
introduced to major festivals, the clash of styles and music
actually made a lot of sense. It made us hungry to prove that
this mix could work. Well it did, and it still does.
I think Pukkelpop really is the best crossover festival ever.
This festival just celebrates all kinds of good music.
In 2009 the production was absolutely fabulous! I don’t think
I’ve ever had better light for my shows. The Belgian crowd
seems to understand what we’re doing there. They not just
show their appreciation, but they simply live it, together
with you. Man, that’s so amazing. At Pukkelpop the vibe, the
light, the production, the hospitality, the crowd, all that is
just fiercely great.”

“I like how relaxed Pukkelpop is. I can walk through
the crowd, have a smoke and all. At most festivals it’s
actually impossible to do that, because you can hardly
get back backstage. They also let a lot of bands play
their first festival there. Whoever decides which band
can play has a good ear for new American or English
bands and is true to the local Belgian music culture.
There are always local bands in the building you’ve
never heard of. It’s a great mixture of underground
and mainstream bands, and then also the range of ages
is so very cool. It’s meant for kids but there’s plenty
of ‘mature people’ on the site as well (laughs). I like
so many things about it. It’s crazy how many times I’ve
been there.”
