I personally do agree with this statement and my aim in this presentation is to justify how negatively they are affecting the workplace, social engagement and education by listing down a list of statistics and examples. I used various website to see what researchers have said about smartphone users and their habits. I also questioned a number of people to ask them how they use they use their smartphones.
The most popular smartphones at this moment are: Blackberry HTC IPhone 4g Palm pre Android All of these phones have the applications made especially for smartphones such as WHATSAPP, BBM, LIVEPROFILE. These applications play a huge part in distracting smartphone users from doing more important things.
A college reviews website found that 50% of students own smartphones³¹ The majority of these students use there phones in class Most are on Facebook, twitter, whatsapp and bbm chatting with friends. Instead of concentrating in class students are taking up time on their phones Even when trying to do assignments and studying students waste so much time on their phones.
Research has shown that many Smartphone users have given up activities such as recreation and socializing.²²² Research has also shown that Blackberry users tend to be more anti social and boring than IPhone users.¹ This is possibly due to the BBM application on blackberry which tends to take away attention of everything else around you when being used. 5 out of 5 users of Smartphone's say they do use their phones even when hanging out with friends.²³ The man in this picture is distracted by his smartphone, instead of spending time with his daughter. These two girls in the first picture are a good example of how smartphones make users anti-social, as they all seem to be paying major attention to their phones than each other.
‘ 20% of workers claim they've been reprimanded by their employers or fellow workers for showing bad manners with their wireless device’.³ Other studies have shown that smartphone’s add to workplace stress, because of the way they take up so much of our time we forget about doing important things first.³³ Productivity and Communication is also reduced due to spemding to much time on your smartphone, chatting away.
These results give a rough idea of how much smartphone users spend so much time on there phones when socializing and in class making them extremely unproductive.
