September 14, 1993 Jerry West (27) and Bryan Kessler (32) meet each other.
December 1993 West and Kessler spend Christmas together
June 1994 Plans made to move in together
July 4, 1994 Move in together; live in the Bronx, N.Y.
November 1994 Kessler and West spend Thanksgiving with Kessler family
Summer 1995 Kessler first met Plaintiff’s parents in Buffalo.
September 1995 Kessler began to work for Pell, Mell, and Bewilder
mid-1990’s Kessler and West began reading about extended families
excluding same-sex partners from making decisions about
health care for each other.
January 1997 Kessler moved to Westfield, N.J., so Jerry could accept position
as insurance underwriter in N.J. Bryan continued to commute
to NYC.
1998 Kessler and West prepared health care proxies
April 1998 West offered management position in Saddle Brook, N.J.
with his insurance company; couple moves to Saddle Brook.
Spring 1998 Kessler left Pell, Mell & Bewilder for solo practice.
October 1998 to June 2000 20 months of West’s intense training programs to become
independent insurance agent.
1999 Kessler and West purchased life insurance
December 1999 Kessler and West prepared wills
June 2000 Kessler’s uncle, Arthur Penn, loaned West money to start
insurance business.
July 2000 West became a trainee agent and began his own insurance
business.
December 2000 Kessler became a licensed “sub-agent.”
December 25, 2000 Kessler’s Uncle Arthur Penn dies.
July 2001 West became independent agent.
By 2001 Kessler became a full-time contract employee agent of the
insurance business.
February 22, 2004 Kessler and West drive to Massachusetts to arrange wedding
May 19, 2004 Kessler and West marry in Massachusetts.
November 12, 2004 Kessler is injured in NYC.
November 13, 2004 First surgery ends successfully
November 14, 2004 Second surgery
November 15, 2004 Kessler dies; West is notified.
