2. Exhibition Statement
Lust is found everywhere. This is the theme of our show, as we have
focused on paintings and photographs that portray lust, dating from the
1500s to the present day. Mary Marshall, John O’Connor, and Shaylah
Kelly have come together to create a presentation of how lust is found in
paintings, photographs, and sculptures and has many levels. Some of our
pieces include lust for touch, some express lust for love or simply for the
attention of another. Lust is a very strong emotion and as it is one of the
seven deadly sins, it expresses a sense of urgency. It’s a desire that we
come by naturally and are taught to keep away from. But there should
not be boundaries in art, so we have brought lust to our presentation as a
way for us to bring up the unspeakable, without words.
This presentation could elicit any number of reactions. Lust is
provocative, and hopefully the presentation will be too. Lust can bring
out desire and longing, or possibly bashful or ashamed feelings, or any
number of things on that spectrum.
