1. PRESS INFORMATION MARCH 2012
MIDEST 2012, BUSINESS CATALYST
FROM 6 TO 9 NOVEMBER, PARIS NORD VILLEPINTE EXHIBITION CENTRE
TH TH
After a 2011 show that was a success both in terms of quantity and quality, the 42 nd MIDEST, the world’s leading
industrial subcontracting show, will be held from 6th to 9th November in the Paris Nord Villepinte Exhibition Centre.
Although 2009 was dominated by the crisis, MIDEST 2010 and 2011 saw a real industrial recovery. However,
although many had been hoping for a lasting improvement, new economic and financial clouds are gathering over
industry. Even so, it would be wrong to lose hope. Accustomed to such fluctuations, subcontractors in general and
French ones in particular have always been able to adapt by turning to the holy trinity of innovation / creation (of
new products) / diversification (of markets and sectors). For its part, MIDEST is again doing its utmost to work
with them and to encourage their diversification and development.
2012 will see a number of new initiatives that will shine the spotlight on a sector, motor vehicles, and a region,
Piedmont. This is also very much an election year and the show too will have a new President in the person of
Jérôme Delabre. SISTEP-MIDEST, THE industry event in Morocco, will also be taking place for the second time in
Casablanca from 19th to 22nd September and will be hosting six major sectors: subcontracting machine tools, sheet
metal, electronics, plastics and services.
MIDEST 2012, the global subcontracting platform
The professionals all agree on this, and so do the figures for the 2011 show: 1,724 exhibitors, including 39% from
36 countries besides France, and 42,769 professionals from all sectors of activity who came to meet them (+5.8%
on 2010), including 15% international visitors from 65 countries.
This year, three exhibition options will be on offer to subcontractors:
• individual stands in the relevant sector: Metal processing, Processing plastics, rubber, composite
materials, Wood processing, Processing of other materials, Electronics and electricals, Microtechniques,
Surface treatments, thermal treatments and finishes, Industrial fastenings, Services to industry and
Industrial maintenance,
• or in one of the show’s 11 Villages: Rubber, Electronics, European fastenings, Foundry, Forging, Shaping
metals, Plastics, Environment services, Treatments for materials, Wood processing, Machining and special
machines
• joint venture pavilions: at least 18 French regions and some thirty countries or foreign regions will be
represented.
Spotlight on motor vehicles and Piedmont
For the first time in 2012, MIDEST is shining the spotlight on a region outside France: Piedmont. This is only fitting
given that this leading player in Italian subcontracting has seen its exhibition space double between 2009 and
2011 to almost 200 m2 last year under the auspices of the Turin Chamber of Commerce and the Centro Estero per
l’Internazionalizzazione. It’s a figure that should be comfortably exceeded this year. Visitors from across the Alps
are the second largest national contingent of visitors after Belgium and make up 10% of the foreign trade visitors.
The show will also be highlighting subcontracting’s number one customer sector, the motor industry, through a
series of conferences and round tables.
Numerous events will be on offer to the professionals, whether they be visitors or exhibitors, to bring them up to
speed with the latest developments and to encourage meetings. The MIDEST Awards will be back again to
highlight subcontractor excellence. Some sixty lectures, both short and comprehensive, will talk about the latest
technical, strategic and economic advances. Finally, there will again be a series of Technology Centres manned by
CETIM (the mechanical engineering technical centre), the CTIF (the materials shaping industry and foundry
development centre) and the LRCCP (the rubber and plastics research and monitoring laboratory).
2. A new President
Every other year the presidency of MIDEST alternates between a representative of the trade associations and one
from the chambers of commerce. For the 2012 and 2013, the latter have nominated Mr Jérôme Delabre. Vice-
President of the CCIT (regional chamber of commerce and industry) for the costal zone of Normandy and Picardy
with responsibility for industry. Mr Delabre, who is 45 years old and a member of the UIMM (Union of metal
industries and trades) office in Vimeau, is very familiar with MIDEST, being the Chairman and Managing Director
of Etablissements Delabre, cutting and stamping specialist, and Delabre France Tôlerie, which is involved in sheet
metal work and fabrication. These have been exhibitors since 1994 on the Picardy regional stand.
MIDEST alongside professionals throughout the year
MIDEST, however, is not confined to these four days of meetings. Over the years its web site www.midest.com
has established itself as the ‘go to’ platform for the sector, serving as a valuable sourcing tool with a powerful
search engine and detailed exhibitor pages together with industry information. Its review of the subcontracting
trade press summarizing the week’s events goes on line every Friday; it allows professionals to consult the latest
surveys of the sector, the Ministry of Industry’s monthly notes on the economy, interviews… The figures speak for
themselves: over two million page impressions, representing a rise of over 23.5% in 2011.
The show has also been tweeting about industry news in real time for more than a year and it has a Viadeo hub
that allows professionals to discuss major topics. Its Twitter account has more than 330 followers and close to a
thousand people are involved in the Viadeo discussions.
