Protection • MOD has a requirement to protect ALL of its equipment in ALL current operations at ALL times • This is a logistical burden • Protection systems need to be: – smaller – lighter – lower consumption of power – cheaper – in general, they need to reduce the burden on MOD © Crown copyright 2013 Dstl 25 June 2014

Enduring challenges (1) • Improvements in protection have long been linked to improvements to protective materials • This is important but there are several other areas to consider • New methods of protection – defeat mechanisms? – disrupter technology? – overlooked areas of physics? Enduring challenges (2) • Novel techniques or uses of modelling and simulation – Can we predict performance of materials and systems more efficiently or more accurately? • Development of novel active systems – Can we use protection methods that sense and ‘switch on’ when required? – Can we detect effectiveness or vulnerability in our protection systems? © Crown copyright 2013 Dstl 25 June 2014

Enduring challenges (4) • Protection needs to be considered as a ‘system’ be that a vehicle, a fleet, or a complete operation • Generic Vehicle Architecture – Increased flexibility and adaptability in the field – Can we create protection systems that are interoperable fleet wide? – Can we share our protection systems with our allies? © Crown copyright 2013 Dstl 25 June 2014
