1. MDD Standard 4
In the following document, I will refer to the evaluation plan I proposed to assess my
students’ performance regarding the contents taught in class, in order to know about
their initial and final progress when it comes to the unit.
The evaluation plan proposed to assess my students has been created from what I
previously designed as a unit and following lesson plans. And, as the first evaluation is
a diagnostic test related to the main focus of the unit which is verb tenses, it allows me
to gather information regarding my students’ knowledge on this matter. I truly believe
that the results I got from the students’ answers to this test were of great help, because it
gave me a referent, a basis on how I had to start developing the unit.
When it comes to the second evaluation, a formative assessment was planned in order to
know a bit more about the students’ ability to follow a pattern and to have an idea on
their writing skills; also, this evaluation gave me the opportunity to know a little bit
more about their knowledge on adjectives and other words, since they had to describe
themselves in the application letter. I must highlight the fact that my students had been
working with application letters during two previous classes before evaluating their
final letter.
In terms of summative assessment, the main focus will be on evaluating the students’
performance when recognizing verb tenses in different sentences, identifying concepts
related to space travelling (which is the main theme/topic of the unit), completing a text
with information from a lecture (listening), and creating sentences with given verb
tenses. As an overall evaluation, students must apply what they have been studying.
Students are also able to reflect on what they did wrong in all these tests, since they
have the opportunity to check the key with the teacher and analyze their mistakes as a
matter of feedback.
The students’ behaviour was a negative influence at the moment of developing this
evaluation plan, because some of the students did not pay any attention to the
instructions or did not answer some questions at all. Another adversity I had to deal
with, and which made hard to have an effective development of the plan, was the fact
that my students were not very proficient for their grade; for example, students in 2nd
2. year high school should know simple verb tenses which are taught in 5th grade
elementary; in the case of my students, most of them proved they did not remembered
verb conjugation, or the difference between regular and irregular verbs.
In order for me to cope with the students’ characteristics that affected the development
of the evaluation plan, I had to add lessons to my unit plan for reinforcing verb tenses
and grammatical structures.
