Chartered in 1962,
the Warner Robins

history of service Eleanor Granum
to the community 1962
and active
participation in
local, state and
national issues.

president, Eleanor Eleanor

Reading Is Fundamental (RIF)
      Celebrity Reads
   Equity Project (GRITS)
          Book Fair
Since 1973, the Warner Robins Branch has partnered
with RIF to provide FREE books to children in the
public schools of Houston County, with the children
always having a choice of books from which to select.
The goal of the
RIF program,
founded by Mrs..
Robert
McNamara in
1966, is to teach
children that
reading really is
FUN. We have
distributed over
70,000 books to
more than 20,000
students.!
Twice during each school’s three year RIF cycle, a Celebrity Read
is planned featuring local celebrities - this event is as popular with
the readers as it is with the students!
The Warner Robins Branch Equity project, the
brainchild of branch member Jane Winston, is an after
school reading group for fifth grade girls. The branch
provides books, refreshments, brightly colored T-shirts,
and leadership for a month to two schools a year. If a
movie has been made from the book , it is typically
watched during a fifth meeting. The hope is that the
schools will continue this popular project on their own.
This fall (2010) marks the 45th
year that the branch has held a
sale, which is our only fund-
raiser. It is the source of funds for
our local projects RIF and
GRITS, and national level ones
such as EF and LAF. Blue
collection barrels are put out in
the community in May.
Sorting and Pricing of books from May until the
sale in November.

The Warner Robins Branch has moved from a
traditional web site to a Wordpress content
management system for easier updating. A non-techie
can add content and update information.
Corresponding Secretary Ann MacKay is the brains
behind this technological advance!
The branch has been using the free Google Groups to
provide instant communication to all members between
meetings. It is used for reminders, calls for help, and
announcements of community information. Files can
be uploaded, photos can be shared, and different
pages can be added for more content.
Now that all our members have
an e-mail address, our monthly
newsletter comes as an e-mail
rather than as an attachment of a
printed layout. We are using the
web based
http://www.mynewsletterbuilder.c
om/ for the newsletter. The cost
is less than what we spent in
printing and postage costs.
Articles contain links to other
websites for more information.

                   Awards 2007
Every year the Warner Robins Branch of AAUW
requests nominations for our Eleanor Granum
award to honor a woman or man who has shared
time, energy, and knowledge through volunteer
service to others in the Middle Georgia area
(Houston and Peach counties). The award is given
at the May branch meeting.
Eleanor Granum is the Founding President of the
Warner Robins branch. She and her husband
raised their family here, and she has given
volunteer service through the years in countless
ways without regard to recognition or reward.
We wish to recognize others who share Eleanor’s
enthusiasm for assisting others, and who serve
without recognition.

Each April Warner Robins member Carolyn Schomer
(below right) organizes the Jean Coleman Golf
Tournament to raise fund Cherished Children, a local
Day Care Center that provides quality child care for
working parents at a reasonable cost. The late Jean
Coleman (below, center left) was instrumental in
starting this center in the 60’s and was able to see it
grow into the beautiful facility that it calls home today.
AAUW not only supports this Fund raiser financially,
but members help out with tasks on the day of the
tournament.
