WHO WAS HAENDEL? - George Friedrich Handel was a German-English Baroque composer, who is famous for his operas, oratorios, and concerti grossi . - He was born in Germany the 23 of February of 1685(the same year that Bach was born), trained in Italy, and spent most of his life in England. - He was born in Halle in the Duchy of Magdeburg, he settled in England in 1712, becoming a naturalised subject of the British crown on 20 February 1727. City of Halle. -He died the 14 of April of 1759.

4. Family -His father was Georg Haendel(1622-1697), he was a barber. - His father had married in the second nuptials Dorothea Taust(1651-1730), twenty-eight years youn ger than his father. -He had two sisters and some step-brothers - Handel when he was young.

5. Early years -At an early age Handel became skillful performer on the harpsichord and pipe organ. -One day Handel attracted with his playing the attention of Johann Adolf, his father´s employer. -Through the Duke’s persuasion, the young Handel was permitted to take lessons in musical composition and keyboard technique from Friedrich Wilhelm Zachow, the organist of the Lutheran Marienkirche. -The house in Halle where Handel was born. -Harpsichord.

6. Later years -In 1710 he moved to London. -With his magic opera Rinaldo, based on La Gerusalemme Liberata Handel enjoyed great success. -Following his recovery Handel focused on composing oratorios instead of opera. -In 1751 his eyesight started to fail in one eye. The house of Handel in London.

Works -Handel’s compositions include 42 operas, 29 oratorios , more than 120 cantatas, trios and duets, numerous arias, chamber music, a large number of ecumenical pieces, odes and serenatas, and 16 organ concerti. -His most famous work, the oratorio Messiah with its Hallelujah chorus, is among the most popular works in choral music and has become a centerpiece o the Christmas season. -Handel’s works have been catalogued in the Handel-Werke-Verzeichnis and commonly referred to by a HWV number.
