Hadrian's Wall was built in Roman Britain during the reign of Emperor Hadrian in the early 2nd century AD. It was designed to defend the Roman province of Britannia and separate it from the rest of Caledonia as well as help control the movement of people and goods between the two regions. The wall spanned over 73 miles from coast to coast across northern England.
