2. Shore Temple
Here you can find a Vishnu temple cradled between two Shiva temples. It is
one of the masterpiece by the Pallavas. It reflects the Dravidian style and it is
said to have built back in 8th century AD. It stands on the seashore of Bay of
Bengal with one side of the temple facing the sea.
3. Arjuna’s Penance
27 metres long and 9 metres high Arjuna’s Penance enjoys a reputation as
world’s largest bas-relief. You can get know about the Hindu myth and routine
vignettes of South Indian life by visiting the Penance.
4. Five Rathas
These five rathas that look like buildings are actually carved from large rocks.
Built during the Pallava times, the five temples are known as Draupadi Ratha,
Dharamraja Ratha, Bhima Ratha, Arjuna Ratha and Nakula-Sahadeva Ratha
which are the names of history’s famous heroes, the five Pandavas and their
wife.
5. Krishna’s Butterball
This giant rock balanced on a hill side is one of the most rousing tourist
attraction in Mahabalipuram. 5 meters in diameter, the butterball is
attributed to Lord Krishna who had an immense appetite for butter.
6. Thirukadalmallai
Thirukadalmallai is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. In order to protect the
sculptures from the ocean, the temple was built by the Pallava King. The best
part is that, the architecture was not corroded by the sea after this temple
was built.
