The VALUE of values Definition:  “Important and enduring beliefs or ideals about what is good or desirable and what is not. Value exert major influence on the behavior of an individual and serve as broad guidelines in all situations.” 
Behavior How do I live? Values What is good and right? Beliefs What is true? Worldview What is REAL? Iceberg Principle in leadership behavior

Focusing on values can help leaders steer others towards new strategy/vision/goals.
Respecting different values can help navigate personal, cultural differences.
Values can change (and sometimes should – think of Paul/Saul).,[object Object]
VALUES-BASED leadership ,[object Object]
Implicit values are assumed values of the leader, and open to misinterpretation.
Explicit values are reflected in the organization’s policies, vision & systems.,[object Object]
Power (dominance over others).

Enjoys social interaction, identifies with group. C:CONCERN FOR ENVIRONMENT- Important to protect & preserve environment. Understands inter-dependence. D:CONCERN FOR OTHERS- Well-being of others is important. Altruistic with a desire to help & contribute. E: CREATIVITY - Important to have new ideas or create new things. Has need for self-expression.
  • 29. Understand your core values (continued) F: FINANCIAL PROSPERITY - Loves making investments, pursuing business opportunities and fiscal growth. G:HEALTH AND ACTIVITY - Important to be healthy and physically active. H: HUMILITY - Important to be humble and modest. Do not work for praise & dislikes limelight. I: INDEPENDENCE - Important to make own decisions & do things your way. J: LOYALTY TO FAMILY OR GROUP - Important to follow traditions & expectations of family or group. Loves dedication & has strong personal beliefs.
  • 30. Understand your core values (continued) K: PRIVACY - Important to have time alone to “recharge”. Could be introverted thinker. L:RESPONSIBLITY – Dependable & trustworthy. Will do more than expected, keeps promises, commitments. M: SCIENTIFIC UNDERSTANDING - Use data, scientific principles & technology to understand and solve problems. Has a quest for knowledge and insight. N: SPIRITUALITY - Value spiritual beliefs & believe that you are part of something greater than yourself.
