Australian CIO Summit 2012: Mobility @ Southern Health by Dr. Philip Nesci
Interview with: Bob Hennessy, Senior VP, Pactera A&NZ
1. Interview with: Bob Hennessy,
Senior VP, Pactera A&NZ
Many companies have unleveraged
technologies sitting on a shelf, because
they have not been able to redesign the
way they do business to extract value
from new opportunities, says Bob
Hennessy, head of Pactera Australia &
New Zealand.
Pactera is a sponsor company at the
marcus evans Australian CIO
Summit 2013, in the Gold Coast,
Queensland, Australia, 29 - 31 July.
What is challenging CIOs in
Australia today?
There are so many overlapping and
intersecting innovations in technology
that it is a real challenge for CIOs to
understand what is best for their
business. A large part of the world is
running big mainframe computers, while
others have switched to full cloud
adoption. There are competing business
models running at the same time.
CIOs need to think more about asset
utilisation. Should they continue doing
what they do? Sometimes the
investment that goes into enhancing
what is in place is more than a new
business model. That creates significant
challenges for CIOs, as they think of
what is best for their business and what
is going to provide the best value
return. The balance of investment
between incremental improvements and
transformation needs to be constantly
challenged to ensure the CIO agenda is
genuinely aligned to the business
strategy.
How should they make these
decisions?
They have to be wholly embedded in the
strategic thinking of the business to
make the right decisions. There are so
many technologies running in parallel
right now, that it is absolutely critical
that the business is wholly engaged in
decision-making around technology.
There must be buy-in from the entire
executive team, to make sure decisions
taken support the business strategy.
Often times CIOs are prevented from
bringing together the right forces to be
successful.
How could CIOs make their
organisation more competitive? Are
they underutilising technologies?
The technology is often already there.
However, with so much being promised,
relatively little business value is being
delivered by the powerful tooling that is
available. Companies may need to
redesign their business to extract value
from new opportunities.
CIOs must consider what they are trying
to achieve and understand what is
required to achieve it. What is still not
being done well in companies is getting
the right blend of genuine, informed
business stakeholder engaged and
driving the outcomes that they want,
sitting alongside high quality technology
people delivering it.
Technologists can build new things, but
the right stakeholder has to be directing
the investment. Unfortunately, good
project management is often also still
missing today.
Lots of people in organisations have an
opinion on what needs to change to
make everyone’s lives easier, and there
is a lot of pressure on CIOs to respond
to that noise. Managing that is the
challenge they have to confront, in
order to bring new competitive value to
the organisation through technology.
CIOs must
consider
what they
are trying
to achieve
and
understand
what is
required to
achieve it
