4. Is the World Heading toward a Food Crisis?
Simply put, yes. The world is indeed heading toward a Food Crisis that maybe caused by
multiple factors such as Global Economic Collapse, Plague, War, Peak Oil, Global Warming,
Natural Disasters, or any other dozen or so scenarios that can lead to collapse of ‘normal’
distribution of food across our country or the world.
Our world is increasingly becoming destabilized and more and more risks seem to pop up
and threaten our current way of life.
Food prices are increasing by the day and
currently over half of all humanity (approximately
3 billion people) eat less than 1000 calories a day.
According to the World Bank, roughly 3 million
people every year are pushed into extreme
poverty and lack nutritional food because of
increasing food prices.
Furthermore, the World Bank estimates that food
prices will steadily increases due to an
unsustainable global population, volatile oil prices, and the loss of wholesale farming lands
now being used for cash crops (crops used for industrial purpose rather than for food). The

5. World Bank takes the global food crisis serious enough that it created the Global Food
Crisis Response Program (GFRP) to educate world leaders and academics of the coming
food crisis and to aid nations that are already affected by it.

What Causes Food Prices to Increase
You might be wondering what causes food prices to increase. There are many variables
involved in the increased prices of food but the major factor is OIL. If oil prices increase,
Page 5 of 12
6. shipping and delivery of food also increase. Middle-East insecurity and constant talk of war
also contributes immensely toward your increasing grocery bill.
Another reason why food prices are increase is the corroding of top soil of the best farming
lands in the world.
One of biggest indicators of a Global Food Crisis is the inevitable
rise of the global middle class. 15% of the global population or
approximately 1 billion people are expected to expect to be part
of the global middle class by 2015.
As household incomes increase throughout the developing word
(South Africa, Asia, Africa) so does food consumption. Current
models for food production are not able to produce enough food for an increasingly global
population and increasing demand for food.
3 Tips to help you Prepare for a Food Crisis
Make sure to follow these instructions to help you prepare for any emergency.
Tip 1: Create a Food Bank
7. Creating a food bank isn’t as easy as just storing 3-7 days’ worth of water and food. A food
bank stores at least 1-3 months’ worth of food and water in a secure area that only you or
your loved ones know.
Below is a list of food items you should have in your food bank. Remember, this list is for 1
person. Multiply this list according to the number of people you will invite back to your food
bank when SHTF!
Water:
1. No less than 1 gallon of water per person per day (30 gallons of water stored for 1
person for 1 month)
2. No less than 2 gallon of water per day for cleaning and cooking purposes.Remember
you will also need to bath from time to time.
Canned Foods:
1. Canned meat, tuna, chicken, turkey, chili, beef stew, soup, spaghetti and meatballs,
nuts, peanut butter. No Less than 3 cans of each for 1 person.
2. Salt, Sugar, Olive Oil, Gatorade mixing pacts (electrolyte drinks). Acquire as much as
possible.
Fruits and Vegetables:
1. Canned fruit/vegetables and fruit/vegetable juices. You will eat approximately 1 can
of fruit or vegetables a day. 30 cans for 1 month per person and so on.

8. Milk/Dairy and Grains
1. Canned, boxed or dried milk and shelf-stable, processed cheese. These are relatively
cheap so acquire as much as possible.
2. Ready-to-eat cereal, crackers, pretzels, instant oatmeal, other non-perishable grain
products. 3 or more boxes should get you through a single month.
3. Nuts (almonds, walnuts) and granola bars. The more you get the better. The energy
you get from nuts and granola bars far outweigh the cost and space they take up in
your food bank!
Other Essentials:
1. Can opener
2. Stove
3. Multivitamins
4. OTC (over the counter medications like Tylenol and Advil)
5. Blankets
6. Desalting Kit (desalting and purifying water)
Avoid:
Avoid frozen foods as you might not have electricity. Once frozen foods melt, their smell
will attract rodents and hungry people who may steal your food or threaten you. Anything
can happen.

9. Tip 2: Storing Food Properly
A food bank is much like a regular bank. It needs to be secured and
it needs to be preferably in a dark, dry, and cool area for optimum
food longevity.
Make sure to wrap perishable foods in plastic bags and keep them
sealed at all times. Don’t throw away the plastic bags because you
might need to reuse them.
Empty salt, sugar, dried fruits/vegetables into a screw top jar so to protect them from
insects and pest. Make sure your jars are dark in color to minimize contact with sunlight.
Rotate foods so that you don’t waste it. Keep newer food items in the back of the food
bank and older ones in front. Date your food packages using ink or marker to keep track of
them. Your food bank should be constantly filled and ready since disasters usually happen
abruptly and without warning.
Make sure to throughout canned goods that are corroded, dented, swollen, or appear to
have other damages either outside or inside the can. You can possibly get sick from these
types of cans. Don’t take a chance.
Tip 3: Preparing Food
10. Preparing food that is stored away will take some creativity and some patience. It may not
be the tastiest but it will relieve your hunger and keep you strong throughout a disaster.
Spices and herbs make any meal taste better as well as sugar, salt, and some healthy oils
such as olive oil. Preparing your food is easy depending on the method of cooking you will
use. Electricity is obviously the easiest method but pressure cookers are also good.

Avoid Common Food Storage Mistakes
1. Not storing enough water. Keep in mind that you need water to bath, cook, clean,
and drink. You can never go wrong by storing more water.
2. Lack of variety when storing food. Eating beans everyday will get tiring. Make
sure to have a variety of foods, spices, oils, and sometimes a treat or two. Comfort
foods go a long way in keeping you psychologically focused and happy. Also, the food
you store must be high in nutrition. Avoid foods that are empty calories like candy,
sodas, ect.

11. 3. Not packing enough food. Also pack more food than necessary. You will almost
certainly be sharing food with strangers and relatives that you know you are the
reasonable minded person who prepares ahead of time.
4. Cooking alternatives to electricity: Buy pressure cookers or learn to cock over a
fire stove. Don’t count on electricity to be your friend in times of need. Better safe
than sorry.
