- Tonight I will be presenting a few information technology options for Club IT, providing a return on investment figure one of the options, and taking you through the systems development life cycle process for a specific recommendation.
- Lisa is interested in a wireless inventory tracking system with an initial investment of $35,000. Money costs associated with the system are 7% bringing the total costs for the three year life of the system to $42,350. By purchasing this tracking system Club IT will eliminate one staff member and save $20,200 a year salary and 18% benefits for the three year life of the system. The total benefit to Club It is %71,508. By investing in this wireless tracking system Club IT will save %29,158 over the course of three years and see a 69% return on investment.
- Another information technology option I researched for Club IT was an executive dashboard. An executive dashboard will assist with sales vs. labor, operations and finance, and can be configured to aide in managerial or executive decisions. Lisa and Ruben could use the information presented in a dashboard to identify trends in the industry or within Club IT, workers approaching overtime and use of comp, promo or voids. They could also view charts and tables to easily make comparisons and view both weather history and forecasts. The dashboard that I am recommending is from ctuitsoftware. It also has mobile capability and is a member of the National Restaurant Association.
- Now I’m going to speak to you about implementing an executive dashboard and take you through the system development life cycle. First we need to investigate the problem to be solved which is the necessity to make more well informed decisions by utilizing IT tools. Next is the analysis phase where we ask what the strengths and weaknesses of the current system are. Most of Club IT’s data is stored on spreadsheets. These spreadsheets provide limited info, require a lot of manual data entry and have the potential for human error. In the design phase the major questions posed are what will the system do and how will the system do it. Output vs. hardware. Programming is not included in my vision of the SDLC process for this particular project since this software is not being developed in-house. Testing will also be limited because the system has been developed and used by similar companies in the same industry. With the implementation phase you need to decide which type of implementation will be done. Since the current system is very limited and can be used as a backup if necessary I am recommending a direct implementation vs. a pilot or phased implementation. Last is the operations and maintenance phase. Once the dashboard is fully operational three types of maintenance are required. Debugging shouldn’t be an issue since this is not developed in-house. However, Lisa and Ruben will need to update information as necessary such as as changes in tax rates or rates of pay. Perhaps later Lisa and Ruben will decide to add functions they may find useful which is an option with ctuit software.
- In conclusion, the wireless order tracking system appears to be a sound investment based on the return on investment figure. Also an executive dashboard such as the one ctuit software offers which is already tailored to the needs of companies such as Club IT would be a useful tool to assist with making decisions for Ruben and Lisa especially if they are considering opening another Club IT.
