Mary Kay Ash founded Beauty by Mary Kay in 1963 with a dream of enriching women’s lives. She started the Company with just $5,000 and the help of her 20-year-old son Richard Rogers and nine Independent Beauty Consultants. This is a photo of the company’s first headquarters - a 500-square-foot storefront in Dallas, Texas.
And some of our most recent international subsidiaries include India in 2007, Singapore in 2009 and Armenia in 2010.
Our World Headquarters is located in Addison, Texas – just outside of Dallas. We also have a manufacturing facility in Dallas, Texas, and in Hangzhou, China. Mary Kay has five distribution facilities in the United States. The distribution centers are located in California, Illinois, Texas, Georgia and New Jersey.
When Mary Kay Ash “retired” from a successful 25-year career in direct sales in early 1963, she decided to write a book to help women survive in the male-dominated business world. She had grown tired of watching young men she trained be promoted over her time and again. Sitting at her kitchen table, Mary Kay made two lists: One contained things the companies for which she had worked had done right; the other included the things she felt they could have done better. When she reviewed the lists, Mary Kay realized that she had inadvertently created a marketing plan for a dream company – one which would provide women with unlimited potential to achieve personal and financial success. With her life savings of $5,000 and the help of her 20-year-old son, Richard Rogers, Mary Kay launched her dream company on Friday, Sept. 13, 1963. From its meager start in a 500-square-foot storefront in Dallas, Texas, Mary Kay Inc. has grown into an international cosmetics powerhouse.
Mary Kay’s founding principles are very much part of what the company is today. Mary Kay Ash’s founding principles were simple and time-tested. She adopted the Golden Rule as her guiding philosophy, determining the best course of action in virtually any situation could be easily discerned by doing unto others as you would have them do unto you. She also steadfastly believed that life’s priorities should be kept in their proper order, which to her meant putting faith first, family second and career third. Few companies can point to such simple yet poignant founding philosophies. Still fewer can point to the lasting impact of a founder like Mary Kay Ash. Today, Mary Kay remains true to the principles Mary Kay Ash jotted down at her kitchen table some 48 years ago.
Countless business leaders, authors, politicians and academia have recognized the pure brilliance and determination of Mary Kay Ash. She received numerous prestigious awards during her lifetime and many more following her death on Nov. 22, 2001. Just a few of her honors include: “ 100 Greatest Women of 100 Years” by the YWCA of Metropolitan Dallas (2008) A&E Television produced “Mary Kay” which aired on the Biography Channel (2006) PBS and the Wharton School of Business’ “25 Most Influential Business Leaders of the Last 25 Years” (2004) “ Most Outstanding Woman in Business in the 20 th Century,” Lifetime Television (1999) National Business Hall of Fame, Fortune (1996) Horatio Alger Distinguished American Citizen Award (1978)

These outdoor learning spaces are designed to allow the powers of nature help children learn, play and heal from abuse. Nature Explore Classrooms are traditionally built in public areas like parks and zoos. Children who are living at a women’s shelter cannot generally go to these areas for safety reasons. This program marks the first time Nature Explore Classrooms were incorporated into a women’s shelter. In 2010, Mary Kay built four new outdoor Nature Explore Classrooms at shelters across the United States.
Mary Kay Inc. has sponsored the construction of nine homes across the country through its partnership with Habitat for Humanity and we are getting ready to begin our 10 th home build. These pictures are from our ninth home building project that we built in conjunction with our annual seminar. We built the home outside of the Dallas Convention Center. So the women in pink, put away their suits and heels and picked up their hard hats and hammers and got to work to build this home for a family in need.
Mary Kay established the foundation in 1996 to support funding for research of cancers affecting women. This helps domestic violence shelters combat domestic violence, provide emergency services and survivor resources.
