2. Introduction
We needed to make sure that our music video and
our ideas for it were suitable for our target audience,
so we designed a questionnaire for our audience to
answer.
We created the questionnaire through Google Docs
and then shared it to multiple people via social
media.
3.
4. AGE
The majority of people who
answered the questionnaire
were between the ages of
16-20.
This is good as our
intended target audience is
young adults, so there
won’t be many changes
needed for our music video.
5. GENDER
The majority of people who answered
the questionnaire were female, which is
understandable as the questionnaire
and our music video consists of a
Taylor Swift song.
Because of our use of elegant themes,
we were expecting a mainly female
audience. However, we also wanted a
fairly universal appeal as well with our
music video, so we were expecting a
small male audience as well, therefore
no major changes will be needed.
7. WHAT GENRE OF MUSIC DO
YOU USUALLY LISTEN TO?
The results were quite inconclusive, but
Rock was the most popular, followed
closely by pop, indie and pop punk etc.
This is expected as these genre’s are
very popular and are often on the
mainstream music charts.
I was expecting an inconclusive result
because we asked lots of different
people, and therefore, like different
genres of music.
As we are sticking to one genre, these
results will not change the production
of our music video. Thankfully, Pop was
one of the most popular responses.
8. WHAT DO YOU THINK WOULD BE AN APPROPIATE COLOUR
SCHEME FOR OUR MUSIC VIDEO?
The most popular answer was generally bright
colours. However, A lot of people also answered
bland colours.
As the two options received a similar count, the
results are inconclusive. However, the song does
have a melancholic sound to it, so it is
understandable why a lot of people thought that
bland colours would be appropriate. However, as
we are tackling the theme of the elements, it is
understandable that people also thought bright
colours would be appropriate.
From these responses, we will stick with our
original idea of using natural colours (as our video
is set in a forest in the middle of the day, so it will
be bright), but we will occasionally add some dark
colours to highlight the song’s melancholic theme.
9. WHAT TYPE OF CAMERA ANGLES WOULD
BE BEST FOR THE MUSIC VIDEO?
Once again, these results are
inconclusive, perhaps because our video
will use a lot of different angles.
Despite the results, the most popular
response was a medium close up shot.
Close up’s were the 2nd most
recommended shot, perhaps because
close up’s usually represent personal
themes and emotions which fits in
perfectly with the song.
Our original idea for our video consisted of
using different camera angles, especially
close up’s, so these results will not affect
the production of the video.
10. OUR VIDEO TACKLES THE THEME OF ELEMENTS. WHICH DO
YOU THINK SHOULD BE THE MAIN FOCUS?
The most popular answer was Water.
I was expecting this result as the song has lyrics
such as ‘I am finally clean’, ‘Rain came pouring
down when I was drowning’ etc. The song talks
about washing away the memories of a previous
relationship, and uses water as a metaphor, so it
is very obvious why it was the most popular.
However, we will also use the other 3 elements to
add more content and to show the contrast
between the elements.
In our original ideas, we wanted a shot in which
water is poured over the model and a bundle of
flowers are burnt. We will keep these ideas but
similar things will also take place, especially
considering water to highlight the theme of the
elements.
11. DO YOU THINK OUR THEMES FIT
WITH THE STYLE OF THE SONG?
Everyone said YES!
From this, we now know
that we have chosen the
right decisions for our
video, and we can expand
on these decisions even
more.
12. WOULD YOU RATHER HAVE THE VIDEO CONSISTING MOSTLY OF
THE ARTIST SINGING OR A MORE NARRATIVE APPROACH?
The majority of people said they
would prefer a more narrative
approach.
I was expecting this result as the
song is personal and very much
like a story and the production of
the song is quite experimental and
doesn't’t involve any live
instruments.
We originally wanted the video to
have a narrative approach, so
these results will not change the
production of the video.
13. WHAT DO YOU LOOK FOR
IN A MUSIC VIDEO?
The majority of people want the video
to have a storyline/be relevant to the
song. Luckily, our original ideas
consisted of a video that closely follows
the theme of the elements.
These results are very conclusive and
thankfully, a lot of these were our
original ideas so we wont need to
change much.
‘Good story line’
‘Storylines to capture the audience's
attention as it can get them involved
more if they feel related to the song and
video.’
‘Energy and entertainment value’
‘Relevance to song, gripping as to keep
viewer(s) focused’
‘Relevance to the message of the
music’
14. WHAT KIND OF COSTUME WOULD YOU
LIKE TO SEE?
The majority of people suggested a
natural costume consisting of natural
colours and minimal makeup.
Again, this is what we discussed for our
original ideas, so we know that we
understand our audience and what they
want to see.
As a group, we think that by keeping
the costume and make up to a
minimum, we can further exaggerate
not only the elements, but also the
model’s melancholic emotions.
‘Casual clothing and not much make up
to make it look natural.’
‘Natural colours, and floral clothing
perhaps. I think with this song it should
be relaxed concerning make up and
hair, as the song sounds relaxing.’
‘Summer dresses windswept hair,
natural look.’
‘Very natural, nothing over the top.’
15. WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE MORE STUDIO
FOOTAGE OR OUTSIDE FOOTAGE?
The majority of people answered
‘outside’ which is what we want as our
video tackles the theme of the
elements.
We originally wanted to shoot the video
in the woods to highlight the theme of
nature, and we will still continue with
this. However, 2 people answered
‘studio’ and we also were talking about
having one or two sections involving
the studio to make the video more
diverse.
