Vertebrates and
Invertebrates
Exploring Science 7 Textbook
7D- Classified
Lesson Objectives:
L. Obj: To know what are vertebrates and
invertebrates.
L.Out: Able to identify vertebrates and
invertebrates, and differentiate them.
W.A.L.T: Types of Vertebrates &
Invertebrates.
Starter Activity 1
Looking at these 8
living things, find the
variation (differences)
and similarities.

Write them all in your
notebook (Individual
work)
Starter Activity 2

Starter Activity 2
What did you learn from this video?
Definition:
Vertebrate- A vertebrate is an animal
which has a spine/backbone.
Invertebrate- An Invertebrate is an animal
without a spine/backbone.
Types of Vertebrates:
1) Mammals
2) Birds
3) Reptiles
4) Amphibians
5) Fish
What are mammals?
Mammals are a group of vertebrates.
They have hair or fur. They give birth to
live young. They produce milk (only the
females)
Dolphins, Whales, Lions, Zebras, Human,
Rats, Deer, Moose etc. are all mammals.
Challenge:

Why is Dolphin not a
fish, but a mammal.
What are birds?
Birds are vertebrates. They are the only
animals which have feathers, They lay
eggs in nest. NOT ALL BIRDS CAN FLY!

D.Y.K: Penguins are birds!
Ostrich, Hawk, Parrot, Eagle, Falcon,
Canary, Dove etc. are all birds!
Challenge:

What makes bat a
mammal, but not a

bird?
It has feathers
alright!
What are amphibians?
Amphibians are adapted to live in land,
and in water.
For more information: Click this linkhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UdelWd
brwww
What are amphibians?
Frogs, Tadpoles, Alligators, Salamanders,
Urodeles etc. are all amphibians.
What are reptiles?
Reptiles are cold-blooded vertebrates
Reptiles have dry scales
Have lungs for breathing

Alligator, Crocodiles, Turtles, Snakes,
Black Mamba etc. are all reptiles!
Challenge

Why is lizard not a
amphibian, but a
reptile?
What are Fish?
Fish are cold-blooded
They lay eggs
Fish are entirely made of cartilage
Angelfish, Goldfish, Swordfish, Swim
Bladder, Hagfish are all fishes!
Discussion

Discuss in groups:
Which group has the
most vertebrates?
MAIN Types of Invertebrates
Molluscs
Arthropods
Echinoderms
What are molluscs?
Molluscs have:
•Have soft body with bilateral symetry
•Many are covered with one or two shell.
•More are aquatic, and a few live on land

Examples of Molluscs: Slug, Snail etc.
What are Arthropods?
Arthropods
have:

• Have bilateral symetry.
• Their bodies are totally covered by an
articulate exoeskeleton like armour.
• The exoeskeleton moults in a process
called moulting.
• They have antenna and eyes, simples o
compounds( thousands of smaller
simpler eyes.
• Some are acuatic others are terrestial.
What are echinoderms?
Echinoderms have:
•Have five-way symetry.
Have a skeleton made of hard plates often with
spines.
•They are covered by a thin skin.
•All are marine animals.

Echinoderms Examples: Sea Urchin, Star
Fish, Brittle Star etc.
In the previous slide, explaining
about arthropods, The
examples of arthropods are not
given. Your task is to name
some arthropods. 
Let’s Check:
Examples of Arthropods:
Spider
Tarantula
Snake
Scorpion (obviously, because you must
have seen the picture)
Discuss:
Are there more invertebrates than
vertebrates?
Are there more vertebrates than
invertebrates?
What group has the most vertebrates?
What group has the least vertebrates?
What group has the most invertebrates?
What group has the least invertebrates?
Plenary (Last Activity)
What did you learn in this lesson

• Write three more things, you will like to
know more about INVERTEBRATES and
VERTEBRATES
Plenary
