4. The Challenge
The McKenney’s team was contracted to lower radon levels by installing
Energy Recovery Ventilators (ERV) in a finished 200-unit condominium
complex—half of which were occupied. Existing homeowners wanted
reassurance that McKenney’s would respect their homes and uphold high
quality standards. Varied floor plans and different construction methods
within the same plan made ERV installation especially complicated.
The Solution
The team established a pre-task plan and met with 100 homeowners to
address individual schedules, expectations and concerns. To contend with
inconsistent floor plans, the installer located space above closet ceilings
to mount ERV units, and a subcontractor installed access doors. Holes
were cut in sheetrock and soffits to install flexible ductwork and in the
building exterior for venting. All holes were patched, sanded and painted.

5. The Results
Following successful ERV installation in more than 200 homes,
independent testing showed radon levels had dropped well below
Environmental Protection Agency requirements.
