2. NARRATIVE
We are told the narrative of the film on the film’s write up as
follows:
“The Nazis set up a secret base on the dark side of the moon in
1945 where they hide out and plan to return to power in 2018.”
Viewers can guess that during this film they will see Nazis
attacking the earth but will be unsure how they will initially attack.
3. IDEOLOGY
From the opening sequence we can assume that:
• The astronauts are protagonists
• The Nazis are antagonists
Because of this we automatically want the astronauts to defeat the
Nazis and are distressed when the white astronaut is killed.
4. GENRE
This film’s genre is sci-fi/ action as the main character travels to
space (typical sci-fi), is set in the future and we can assume that
there will be some sort of battle (incorporating the action).
5. CHARACTERISATION
• Straight away we can tell that the guy in the black suit is a stereotypical African-
American man because of his well defined accent and speech pattern. He comes
across as un wanted by control as he is told to get off the main frequency.
• We are also introduced to the Nazis, although nothing is said about them at this point
we can tell that its them by the font that helium 3 is written in- stereotypical Nazi
writing.
• The man in the white suit we can tell was supposed to be on the mission as he was
tasked with the more complex jobs, like using a metal detector and scouting the
perimeter, rather than having his picture taken like the main character. This sets him
as more intelligent and more passionate about the moon landing by how exited he
gets when he finds the base, unaware of the impending doom for him.
6. SETTING
The setting of this film is the dark side of the moon in 2018. we
know this by the use of captions in the beginning of the opening
sequence. Apart from this, the viewer is left in the dark, only to
guess what will happen later in the film.
7. VISUAL STYLE
CGI is used to create an attractive yet simple outer space for the
introduction of the film. This makes the film more real as a cheap
film producer cannot physically film outer space without costing
them billions.
The opening sequence is very dark which links to the war as it was
a dark time. Low key lighting makes the Nazis appear shameful
and dark rather than using high key lighting which would make the
viewer look at the situation differently
