It is with much delight that I write this letter of recommendation for Mike Gilmore. He
has been a very energetic and selfless staff interpreter for Historic Smithfield Plantation
for the past year. In that role, Mike has not only helped us shares the history of
Southwest Virginia, the Preston family, and the New River Valley with guests to the
plantation, but he helps with everything from heavy lifting to portraying a "spirit" for our
Halloween event. His thirst for information and joy in sharing the history is always
evident, regardless of the context in which he helps. In addition, Mike is probably one of
our most gentle and caring interpreters; he truly seems happy to help and enjoys his time
at the plantation. He easily interacts with children as well as adults on the tours and can
carry on conversations on many subjects.
Mike has truly been an asset for Smithfield Plantation. His passion is true and dedication
uncompromising. I highly recommend him for any position that includes education, and
