• Motives
– Find better trade opportunities: trade partners, raw materials (gold, spices),
and ports.
– Overpower any Indian Opposition
– Spread the faith of Christianity and help convert natives
• Early Successes
– Henry the Navigator: financed voyages on oceans, and with the help of
astronomers and map makers, helped charted directions for future sailors.
– Vasco De Gamma: took a fleet of Portuguese explorers and reached to Calicut,
India, in what many considered the spice capital of the world.
3. Christopher Columbus
• 1451-1506
• Portuguese explorer
• Major component in early phases of European expansion and
colonization
• Sailed to fin indies to establish trade prosperity
• Found continent of America, which would later set up more voyages
and an eventual colonization.
4. Treaty of Tordesillas
• Established in 1494 by Pope Alexander VI
• Spain v. Portugal in a competition for trade dominance
• Divided two countries the Atlantic world
• This dividing line gave Portugal Brazil, which allowed them to claim,
conquer, and colonize.
5. Antonio de Gouveia
• (1528-1566)
• Educator and Humanist from Portugal
• Born and raised as a Christian, but later studied other secular
subjects. (science, astrology, medicine). Convinced people he knew
the secret of invisibility.
• Various skills gave him title, “Gold Priest” would later use his skills to
help country prosper economically.
6. Catarina de Monte Sinay
• 1680-1758
• Entrepreneur and nun
• Loved her life to her nun life and dedicated herself to find true
salvation.
• Spent most of her time in Bahia, Brazil trying to help people to God
and spreading the Christian faith from native home.
7. Francisca
• Indian Slave Woman
• Claimed to be wrongfully enslaved, worked to fight for her freedom.
• Engaged in a relationship with Angelico Goncalves. He would later
play a part in Francisca’s fight for freedom.
• Failed to bring witnesses to court resulted in her return to her slave
life.
