This document summarizes plans to expand Highway 401 through Mississauga and Milton from 2016 to 2031. In Mississauga, Highway 401 will be expanded to a 12-lane core/collector system between Hurontario Street and Trafalgar Road. In Milton, Highway 401 will be expanded to a 12-lane system from Trafalgar Road to James Snow Parkway, and a 10-lane system from James Snow Parkway to Regional Road 25, with HOV lanes included in both directions for both areas. A study is also underway to rehabilitate or replace aging structures on Highway 401 from Trafalgar Road to the Halton regional boundary.

Transportation Milton 2016-2031
Highway 401 Improvements
through Milton
September 17, 2013
2. Background
• Highway 401 from Trafalgar Road to Regional Road 25
is a six-lane divided freeway with a median barrier.
• Each day approximately 108,000 – 143,000 vehicles use
Highway 401 in Milton.
• Highway 401 in Mississauga currently is a six lane
divided freeway. East of Highway 401/410/403
interchange, a 12-lane express-collector system is in
place.
• Each day approximately 127,000 - 188,000 vehicles use
Highway 401 in Mississauga
3. Current Status of Highway 401
• To have a complete picture of Highway 401
improvements, need to look at 2 separate areas.
1. Highway 401 through Mississauga
2. Highway 401 through Halton
5. Highway 401 Expansion Through Mississauga
• Highway 401 expansion through the City of Mississauga
is planned, designed and constructed in three segments:
1. Highway 401/410/403 interchange to Hurontario Street (2.3km)
• the expansion of express/collector expansion ($106M) has
been under construction since 2009.
• By end of 2013, this section of the Highway 401 will be
expanded to a 12-lane core/collector system including
provision for HOV lanes in both directions.
1. Hurontario Street to east of Credit River (4.0 km)
• Design is underway for construction start in 2014 with the
widening of Mavis Road bridge.
• When complete, the 12-lane core/collector system will be
extended to west of Mavis Road, including HOV lanes in
both directions, at which time the HOV lanes will be opened.
6. Highway 401 widening- new express lanes were opened to traffic
on July 5, 2013 in the WB followed by EB opening on July 20, 2013
8. The Hurontario basket weave, direct exit from WB Express to
Hurontario, was opened on June 17, 2011
9. Highway 401 Expansion Through Mississauga
(continue)
3. Credit River to Trafalgar Road (9.7 km)
• The Preliminary Design and Environmental Study for this
section of Highway 401 has received environmental
clearance.
• The recommended plan includes widening Highway 401 to:
– a 12-lane core/collector system from Credit River to Winston
Churchill Boulevard,
– a 10-lane simple freeway from Winston Churchill Boulevard to
407 ETR, and
– a 12-lane core-collector from 407ETR to east of Trafalgar
Road.
– HOV lanes are included in both directions.
11. Highway 401 Expansion Through Milton
• Highway 401 expansion through Halton Region is
planned in two segments:
1. Preliminary Design and Environmental Assessment Study from
Trafalgar Road to Regional Road 25 (9.0 km)
• Environmental clearance was received in the summer,
which will allow the Ministry to proceed with property
acquisition and initiate detail designs.
• The recommendations include:
– expansion of this section of Highway 401 from a 6-lane cross-
section to a 12-lane core/collector system between Trafalgar
Road to James Snow Parkway and a 10-lane cross-section
between James Snow Parkway to Regional Road 25;

• The Highway 401 Study has been aligned with the GTA West
Corridor Study.
• The GTA West Corridor Study is looking at longer term and
interregional transportation needs for an area between
Highway 400 in York Region to Highway 401 in the Regions
of Wellington and Halton.
• The Highway 401 Study provides the base corridor
recommendations to which the GTA West Corridor will be
built upon as part of its on-going Environmental Assessment
Process.

2. Preliminary Design and Environmental Study for Highway 401
Structure Rehabilitation from Trafalgar Road to Halton
Regional Boundary.
• This study is to prepare a strategy to rehabilitate or replace
structures from Trafalgar Road to Halton Regional
Boundary in order to keep structures in good state of repair
and to advance bridge construction for the ultimate 401
widening.
• The strategy will consider upcoming Highway 401 widening
to optimize efficiency, minimize traffic impact and avoid
future throwaways.
• This study is anticipated to be completed by summer 2014.
