4. Problem Statement
In Aug2015, BBMP gave a stern warning to the
apartment comprising136 flats to take care of their
waste or face penalty cost being levied
From long time, more than 99.8% of waste
generated from the apartment was considered
mixed waste resulting in overloaded area, stinking
smell,dissatisfaction among House keeping staff,
increased work load,unwillingness and dissatisfied

5. Project Goal
Eliminate the defective rate and SCVs from the
collection process system by almost 100% by
Nov2015 and yearly workman savings of 50%
7. Define Phase
Keep waste bins outside of each corridor of the block for DRY and
BIOHAZARD waste
Educate every flat resident about the necessity of separating the wastes
Educate the house keeping staff about the process of waste collection
Incentivise the house keeping staff on utilizing the dry waste for themselves
and share the profits among them.
Maintain separate registry on daily basis about the flat details, resident details
and get signature from them
Each flat's wet waste to be taken only if properly managed. Otherwise, give
back to them and ask them to maintain
8. Measure Phase
On daily basis, the waste collection was measured by house keeping staff
visiting each flat, recording in the registry-data collection and accepting the
waste only when it is maintained.
Those flats not maintaining their waste was not cleared, recording in the
registry along with their signatures.
Every block was given specific time slots for waste collection.
9. Analyse phase
Based on the data collected and measured, it was noted that the change
management initiative got the traction it needed after initial resistance
House keeping staff were relieved as the nightmare for them has been reduced
significantly
Visual noticiations were setup with boards in every block, educating the
residents about the bins kept outside. This acted as SOPs
The SCVs have been eliminated from the system and defective rate has been
reduced significantly
10. Improve phase
The waste management process was poke-yoked which made the system
effective resulting in reduction of overall collection process cycle time by
67%, an improvement of 17% from the goal of 50%
Customer- BBMP contractor has seen improvements in savings in fuel and
labour from his side
The SCVs have been eliminated from the system and defective rate has been
reduced significantly
There is no overload of waste and timely clearnace has been achived
11. Control phase
There is also an opportunity to reuse the waste internally by composting
This could result in savings of yearly 50% cost on fertilizers procurred
currently
ROI is being analysed for introducting the new process in to the existing
system
This could also result in savings of yearly 108K INR currently being given to
BBMP contractor for waste collection
