He has lived for more than 50 years with one functioning lung. He had
the other removed as a young man because of infection
He likes to travel by bus
He trained as a chemist
He speaks fluent Italian, as well as Spanish and German.
Until now he has been living in a small flat, eschewing a formal bishop's
residence.
He told Argentineans not to travel to Rome to celebrate but to give their
money to the poor instead.

“Let me tell you a story”
Pope Francis described how during the conclave he was comforted by his friend,
Brazilian Cardinal Claudio Hummes, as the votes were going his way and it seemed
“a bit dangerous” that he would reach the two-thirds necessary to be elected.
When the threshold was reached, applause erupted in the frescoed Sistine Chapel.
“He (Hummes) hugged me. He kissed me. He said, `Don’t forget about the poor!’”
