competitive forms of photography. This is mainly due to

the fact that you can earn far more money than in any
other aspect of photographic industry.
Every day companies pay millions of dollars on
advertisement; with one goal - to sell their product.
Companies want to tell the reader that their product is
best - so you must be able to match this.
The photographers work must be to the highest
technical quality and he/she must have the ability to
create a masterpiece from something simple. Close
enough is just not good enough. Close enough will not
sell a product.
To become an advertisement photographer one must

first understand the market and understand what the
client is looking for. The best way of understanding this
is pick up a magazine and look at the ads. Study each
image. Study the images you see on billboards or
images that are used to advertise movies.
Most parts of advertisement photography can be
classed as still life photography. So if you are
interested in taking images for the advertisement
market your first job is to set up your own home studio.
This can be a great place to practice.
Every thing in your home can be photographed. Start off
with a few glasses. But remember you are not trying to
make the glasses look nice - you are trying to sell them.

The second thing you need is a large format camera.
Buy a range of the best lenses. Slide film is your best
choice for advertisement photography. The client may
want to blow up the images to a billboard size.
The most important thing when starting off is creating a
portfolio of your work. This can be sent to advertising
agencies or can be shown directly to a company. Always
have a few copies on standby. Also set up a web page.
On-line advertising is growing at a spectacular rate.
Your portfolio should also consist of a different range of
images.
If you are thinking of using an advertisement agency,

get their guidelines from them. These should be very
helpful to you in understanding the market. Dealing with
a well established agency should be very profitable for
you if your photography is to par.
Advertisement can be seen everywhere - and about
eighty percent of all ads use photography. Most

The invention of the camera liberated painting from its
reportage role. Gone was the need to produce a
likeness, detail the events of the story, painting was
free to express emotions. True what had gone before
contained an emotional content but now painting could
experiment and through imaginative interpretation allow
the emotional content to predominate. Freed from this

constraint the painter was able to create a new
language and explore the motivations of their art.
As the 19th century evolved and throughout the 20th
century painters from the impressionists through the
cubists and expressionists to the minimalists could to
use colour, line and form to go straight to the emotional
content of their work. The representational aspect of
the work become coincidental and was pushed to the
point that it became akin to lying on the grass making
shapes out of clouds. Enjoyable as it may be it is
secondary to the nature of clouds.
The introduction of the digital darkroom has given this
freedom to photographers. The range of tools to fix and

enhance the camera’s capture when pushed to its
extremes produces a range of fascinating effects. When
added to the filters built into the better software,
images can be produced that any comparison to the
original photograph is purely coincidental. As
photographers explore these tools and incorporate them
into their photographs so their visual language will
grow. The revolution of the medium with the
development from black and white into colour is taking
its next step. Now with the digital darkroom’s ever
growing range of tools the only limitation is the
photographer’s imagination.
With the use of these tools, the skilled photographic
artist can take the pop song and create, in visual terms,

the lyric beauty of a baroque symphony or the down
town jive of a jazz variation without a tree or a high rise
in sight. Just the light captured by the camera and fine
tuned into something completely different, something
new that comes from the photographer.
The photographer has been liberated like the painter
before them by technology. Now photographs can
explore the full range of human experience including
those they have no words to express. Large statements
will be accessible by the photographer not only in
physical terms. Although like their painter counterparts,
through an additional feature of the technology, the
large canvas is becoming the order of the day. That this
canvas can express feelings rather than just illustrate

them denotes that the photography has become an adult
in the arts.

Photography is the art of reproducing pictures of
people, objects or places in their exact likeness. These

images can be transferred on any photosensitive
material. Photography includes taking and printing
pictures.
The backbone of photography is the camera, the
instrument or device that works on the principle of
optics. The camera and photographic techniques have
undergone phenomenal changes since the time the first
camera was made. The earlier model did not contain the
film; instead, it had a small light-shield box with lens
and translucent screen on either side. The image that
traveled through the lens was stored on the screen.
Known as 'camera obscura,' it was no more than a
sketching device for artists.

Then the scientists discovered the quality of silver
nitrate that changes its color when exposed to light.
This was the beginning of photogram, a method of
making permanent images.
They would place objects on the paper dipped in silver
nitrate and expose it to the sunlight. After sometime the
area covered under the object stayed white while the
rest of the space turned black. However, the image
formed was temporary, so the method did not last long.
Over the centuries, the principles, the method and the
material used in photography went through many
changes. After experimenting with various methods like
Daguerre and calotype process, finally collodion, or the

wet plate technique was universally accepted.
Modern photography has given a totally new meaning to
the entire perception of life and privacy. Photography
has made it possible to capture and preserve special
moments, in private and in public life. History became
more authentic with pictures, and photographs served
as evidence in many cases. People made their family
tree in their albums. Suddenly life was so much more fun
and meaningful.
With the tremendous technological advances in the art
of photography, it is no more just fun and frolic but has
acquired the dimensions of a full-fledged profession.
Photography has many branches and types, such as:

- Aerial photography is the art of taking photographs
from the air.
- Art photography is devoted to beautiful pictures for the
sake of beauty only.
- Studio or advertising photography is dedicated to
promotion of products and institutions.
- Photojournalism takes pictures of events to support
the news story and to create awareness among the
people.
- Outdoor and travel photography is focused on taking

pictures of landscapes and natural places.
- Sports photography records images of the sporting
events and games that take place in the world.
- Some types of photography like the macro and
scientific and macro or close up photography are
restricted to specific fields and are not widely known.
The charm of photography lies as much in the end
product as in the process of taking pictures. Looking at
an album is like taking a trip down memory lane; it
makes us feel highly nostalgic and emotional.

Babies can be the most challenging and rewarding
portraits to take, but can also be the most frustrating.
Babies tend to sleep, eat and cry a lot and won’t pose in
front of the camera but don’t let that put you off
photographing them. Creating the perfect baby portrait,
when done right, will certainly be rewarding.
One of the most important factors in photographing
babies is patience and the way you apply child
psychology when relating to the baby. Babies over six
months may be shy and won’t react well to a complete
stranger. This is where child psychology comes in - you
must try to play with the baby, or even become a child

yourself while taking the photograph. The keys of your
car can be very effective. But remember, your job is to
take a baby portrait; you must be able to react quickly
when the infant responds to your entertainment.
Shooting a portrait of a newborn baby can be difficult.
At this age the baby will not be active, so it’s better to
focus on close-up headshots. Try using natural light from
a bedroom window to add mood to the portrait.
Babies over a few months of age will be more alert and
will have a lot more movement in them. Shooting fast is
a necessity, the infant will tire quickly.
Babies seven months or older can be very tricky to

shoot. The baby will bore quickly and will not want to
stay in the same position.
If you are serious about baby photography and you tend
to shoot from your own studio make sure you have a lot
of toys to amuse the infants. A light colour background
will work best and shoot the portraits in colour and
black and white.
Parents may be worried about the affect of studio lights
on their baby. Point out that strobe lights have no effect
on kids. Try to point this out before the parent asks.
Don’t ever handle a baby without the parents consent.
Most parents will be very protective and won’t react

well to a stranger lifting the infant.
Watch out for the fingers - fingers in the mouth can be
attractive but on most occasions they will obscure the
face.
If you plan to resell the baby photograph to an agency
make sure you get a release form signed from the
parents. There is a large market out there for baby
pictures but agencies or magazines won’t touch them
without the parents consent. For baby portraits to be
sellable they must be technically perfect, but the
picture must illustrate the baby being active or some
form of child care.

Birds have been one of the greatest subject for
photographers for centuries now because they have an
inspiring beauty and mystify us with their gift of flight
and diversity. When it comes to photographing birds and
their behavior, catching it on film will add a tremendous
visual impact and feeling to any picture. There are
different locations where birds gather, but really the

best place you may what to start is your backyard. The
thing about birds is that they are busy little bodies and a
bird feeder in the backyard is a great place to get a
picture when they are feeding or even the bird in the air
getting ready to pounce one of the birds that is
currently feeding.
When you venture out of your backyard to look for birds
to photograph your vehicle may just become your
newest piece of equipment. Birds see our cars less of a
threat then a person carrying a long lens underneath
their arm. A vehicle makes for a great blind and along
with this patience is a virtue. When you find a location
such as a prime feeding ground, park a bit of a ways
from it and stop your engine to cut down on noise that

may scare them.
Standard,wide-angle and short zoom lenses can be used
for photographing birds, but for serious bird
photography, a quality 500 mm or 600 mm telephoto lens
is ideal.
Please keep in mind to avoid any situation that can put
stress on the birds and their surroundings. If you notice
a bird that is starting to show any kind of stress, this
means that there is a nest or chicks near by. Any further
picture taking should be disengaged and you should
leave the immediate area. As a photographer of birds or
any wildlife, it is a good thing to remember not to put
ourselves or the birds around us in any kind of danger.

digital photography. With black and white digital

digital cameras come equipped with a function to take
these types of photos. If your digital camera does not
support this function, you can still change your

You’ll want your black and white digital photography to
look its best when you are finished. A technique that

Nobody wants a standard printout for a picture that they
took of their family. If you are like me you always strive
for brilliant pictures that look professional. I say this but
my photos are less than professional. Thanks to a little
bit of editing and some capable software I can usually
fake it. I am going to assume that if you are reading this
article that you already know that printing photos online
is the only way to go for quality digital photos and price.
How do I edit my pictures first?
When uploading your pictures to a professional printer
they usually have some photo editing software available
to use. This is usually enough to take care of your

standard fixes. If you really want to do a number on the
photo you can buy a copy of Adobe Photoshop. This
program is very expensive and has a very steep learning
curve. If you have Microsoft Office like most of the
world there is a very simple editing program that comes
with it. You can usually use that program with no prior
experience and it works rather well to do some routine
fixing to your digital photos. Then next best option is the
software that came with your digital camera. This
software works rather well and if you did not know that
your camera came with it then it is like getting free
software.
Will my pictures look like I expect them to?

Printing photos online can and should be exactly what
you expect. The catch is you have to know what to
expect. Many printers and shops that will let you upload
you photos will not alter your pictures or make any
adjustments other than size. There are other photo
developers who will alter them. This does not mean they
make major changes. They will most often change the
hue. So in deciding who you will use to process your
photos keep in mind that some will print them exactly as
you uploaded them and others will apply a little
alteration to your pics.
What do I need to watch out for?
The biggest problem with uploading your pictures is that

the buyer does not upload the correct picture or they
will upload a poor quality picture and when it is printed
it is still poor quality. Make sure that all of your pictures
are edited correctly and that they have been uploaded in
the correct format.

After spending a significant amount of time taking
pictures, and accumulating a large library of images, it
can be a daunting task looking for a way to sell your
work.
With the right approach and a vast amount of hard work
you soon may see a return for all the hours spent
outdoors.
One of the easiest ways to begin with is holding a local
gallery in your town hall, inviting all your family, friends,
and especially local businesses.
This first gallery can be used as a learning point. The
place where you make mistakes, but you should learn

from them. Good friends will understand or even make
fun at your mistakes, but will know it’s the start of a
new business.
When selling prints in a gallery don’t make unnecessary
claims about the durability of your prints. Give advice on
how to take care of the prints, such as: don’t store them
in humid conditions or don’t expose them to direct
sunlight. Try to print on good quality paper.
Choose your time carefully when holding your first
exhibition. Don’t hold it in early January; most people
spend a lot of money over Christmas and don’t like
spending too much in the new year. Pick a time where
there’s a lot of visitors coming to your town. Local

images should sell well with tourists. Don’t try selling an
image that you think is just “OK“. If an image isn’t good
enough to hang on your own wall at home, it is not good
enough to be exposed to the public.
There are plenty of other ways to sell your photography.
Stock Agencies require a minimum submission of 500 -
1000 images, and regular submissions thereafter, with
very low returns. Sometimes it’s better to go it alone
promoting your own work, especially if you’ve got the
drive to become a salesperson. And no better place to
start than in your local town with your first exhibition.
After getting the feel for exhibits, there is no reason why
you can’t go to other towns or cities. Galleries all over

the world are always looking for new upcoming
photographers.
There are no rules to what makes a picture sell.
Sometimes having them in the right place at the right
time can attract a client or customer. Images are used
throughout the world to sell products and ideas, and
there’s no better place to start than with your local
community.
If your pictures are good enough to be entered in
competitions, or hang at home on the wall, they are
certainly good enough to sell.

Anyone with the ability to use a camera correctly has
the potential to sell their images. Picture agencies
handle images of every subject and are always looking
for emerging talent.
Pictures libraries and stock agencies are in the
business of selling images. The don’t give you advice on
how to take better images. Their purpose is business -

they sell images to magazines, book publishers, the
travel industry and many other industries that use
images.
Many photographers look upon agencies as a last resort
to sell their work; if you have been unable to sell any of
your images, the chances are that most agencies won’t
accept them.
If you are interested in an agency selling your images,
you must be able to produce high quality images which
are suited to the agencies market. Check out their
website to view samples that are currently in use.
If you feel your work meets their standards and suits
their customers - then approach them by e-mail or by

standard mail.
But, before placing your work at an agency make a
short-list of the agencies that seem to suit your work.
Contact each agency outlining your work and which
magazines have already published your images. If an
agency is then interested they will ask you to send them
samples.
If an agency accepts your work, don’t take this as a
guarantee that your images will sell.
Don’t approach an agency until you have a large
collection of images. Minimum first submissions can
consist of anything from 50 images to 500 and regular

submissions are normally required thereafter. Most
agencies work on a commission basis - 50 % being the
standard rate. If an image sells for two hundred euro -
the photographer receives a one hundred euro fee.
When an agency takes on a photographer’s work, they
normally require a four or five year retention period.
Agencies normally sell the reproduction rights of a
pictures - the image being licensed to a buyer for a
specified purpose.
It may take as long as six months before an agency sells
a picture belonging to you. First they need to scan your
images if they are submitted by film; then they need to
contact their clients and let them know that there is

new material available - all of this takes time, so you
must look at supplying a picture agency as a long term
investment. It is only when you have several hundred
images placed in a library that you’ll start to see regular
sales.
Remember: agencies can’t sell images if there isn’t a
market for them and placing images at an agency does
not guarantee you sales.

If you are like me having a photo processing lab in your
office is too much to resist. I bought a $360 digital
camera, a $400 color photo printer and I was ready for
business. Or so I thought. I took piles of pictures and
filled my hard drive up with somewhat goofy pictures of
all my kids, neighbors, cars and pets. I was really
pleased just to have them on my computer ready to
peruse at my leisure. When I showed them to relatives
they often requested copies that I was dying to make
with my new lab equipment.

Printing pictures at home was too expensive and the
quality was poor
After printing the first 2 or 3 photos it struck me that
they were not fit to put in a frame that would grace the
walls of my 800 square foot apartment. I could still see
the printer lines when I looked closely. Although the
picture on the computer was incredibly clear, the
printed copy had lost its crisp edge. I still did not give up
hope. I wanted to print my own photos! I set out to find
the highest quality inks and the finest of photo papers.
All at its due cost I was ready to process some photos
that would make my neighbors and colleagues sick with
jealousy. To make a long story short I have not used my
color printer since that day and I have a drawer in my

desk full of rather expensive blank photo paper.
I lived the next few years content with flipping through
folders on my laptop when family was in town. When
they were out of town I would avoid their phone calls
and email the pictures in hopes that they would find a
compressed photo sufficient to fulfill their needs.
Then out of the blue my husband decided to learn more
about photography in a three week course offered at a
nearby local college. Every night he would come home
and rattle on about all the cutting edge information they
taught him about the new digital photography age that
we had entered.

In the midst of his sharing this information I heard him
mention that the professor owned a rather large chain of
camera shops.

easy

various other options. It flicked a switch in my rather
foggy brain and I realized that I could have my very own
photo processing lab. Instead of retrieving the photos

putting more nails in my walls to hang some very

Photo collections – for traditional photographers the
phrase conjures thoughts of bound albums and mounds
of shoeboxes, stuffed to capacity with 5 x 7 inch
pictures. For today’s ever growing ranks of digital

photographers however, it brings to mind thoughts of a
stamp-sized memory card, a pocket hard drive, or CDs
and DVDs. Welcome to the world of digital photography,
which is fundamentally changing the way we capture
and preserve images.
Digital photography today is a rapidly growing consumer
pastime with many advantages versus traditional film-
based cameras, including the ability to immediately
review, erase, annotate or categorize images, speed and
ease of operation, and quality at the high end of the
digital photography scale. Although some film cameras
can operate without batteries, minus the flash, most
consumers are unconcerned with use in wet or poor
weather environments and are drawn to digital cameras

by all of the advantages that they offer.
Because of this, the entire photography industry is
changing to embrace different consumer preferences,
including a reduced desire for printed photos. The
market for printed photos from film in the United States
peaked in 2000 at over 30 billion, and then fell to under
26 billion by 2004. Initially, there were problems with
quick-service photography shops “cropping” digital
images in order to force them to print properly on the
same paper used by film cameras – as more and more
people move to digital however, services and products
emerge to make it easier to transfer your memories from
electronic to tangible.

Some people feel that a picture just isn’t a picture if you
can’t put it into a frame (although wireless, internet-
enabled miniature LCD ‘picture frames’ ARE available) or
store it in a photo album. But many of today’s young
people are much more comfortable with technology than
their parents and grandparents. It is not uncommon for a
college student to feel more secure with electronic
images than paper ones.
No one is certain whether digital photography will
eventually reduce our demand for photo prints, but it is

photo montages makes the photos fun to watch. and
more people will enjoy viewing them with you. So how
do you know if you've found a quality slideshow
company? An important rule of thumb to remember is,
"If the price seems too good to be true, then it usually
is". No real slide show creating company can give you
quality work without putting quality time into it. The
less the price, the less the amount of time going into it.
You might as well go buy yourself the cheapest slide
