2. Pronouns take the place of a noun.
Our focus today:
• Reflexive pronouns
• Direct object pronouns
• Indirect object pronouns
3. Reflexive pronouns
They are used with reflexive verbs. (infinitives with –se) at the end.
They help reinforce the idea that one is doing something to oneself.
They are: me, te, se, nos, and se
They go in front of the verb.
Example:
Me lavo la cara. = I wash my face.
¿A qué hora te despertaste? = What time did you wake up?
4. Direct object pronouns with things
Take the place of the direct object.
The direct object answers the “What” of the verb
The direct object pronouns for things are lo, la, (it) los, and las (them)
They go in front of the verb in the sentence.
Example: Ellos leyeron el libro. =They read the book.
Ellos lo leyeron. = They read it.
5. Direct object pronouns with people.
In sentences where the direct object is a person, there are a few more pronouns.
They are: me, te, lo, la, nos, los, las
me, you, him, her, us, them
Example: Yo no te escuché. = I didn’t listen to you.
6. Indirect object pronouns
They only answer the question “to whom”
They go with verbs like “gustar”
They are: me, te, le, nos, les
to me, to you, to him/her, to us, to them/you guys
They go in front of the verb.
Example: Jorge nos llamó anoche. = Jorge called us last night.
7. Placement choices
In the case of conjugated verbs followed by an infinitive, you have the choice to add
the pronoun to the infinitive OR put it in front of the conjugated verb.
Example: No quiero hacer la tarea. = I don’t want to do the homework.
Option 1: No quiero hacerla.= I don’t want to do it.
Option 2: No la quiero hacer. = I don’t want to do it.
This also applies to the present progressive.
Ella está hablándome. = She is talking to me.
Ella me está hablando. = She is talking to me.
8. One more point!
In certain sentences, two pronouns are used.
They should both go in front of the verb, or both get attached to the last verb.
The order is called “RID” which means “Reflexive, indirect, direct”
Example: Ella dijo la verdad a mí. = She told the truth to me.
Ella me la dijo. = She told it to me.
Ella no pudo decírmela. = She couldn’t tell it to me.
