Executive Summary
• A Choice to Change the World echoes our responsibility as a department to provide opportunities
for the X community to evolve as a strong, healthy and vibrant community. Our mission is to
change unhealthy habits and old belief systems that perpetuate poor health and wellness. We live
in a time where success and happiness simply cannot be measured by money, education and
power alone but in our ability to live long enough to enjoy it.
• The objective of this PowerPoint presentation is to demonstrate innovative ways to use physical
education and wellness add value to the X experience. You will see how the areas can be
strategically used to support a growing community of exercisers and create financial sustainability
for the college. The X experience is a brand that demands quality, integrity and empowerment.
The Physical Education, Wellness and Recreation experience cannot fall short of expectations.

Situation Analysis
• The latest statistics confirm that more than half of all Americans are overweight or obese; a
startling one out of five children ages 5 to 17 is obese; approximately 28 million adults are dieting
to lose weight and another 23 million think they should be. An estimated 40 billion dollars is spent
annually on diet books, products, and services. Ninety percent of all dieters regain weight loss
within one year.
• African American women have the highest rates of being overweight or obese compared to other
groups in the U.S. About four out of five African American women are overweight or obese.
• In 2011, African Americans were 1.5 times as likely to be obese as Non- Hispanic Whites.
• In 2011, African American women were 80% more likely to be obese than Non-Hispanic White
women.
• In 2007-2010, African American girls were 80% more likely to be overweight than Non-Hispanic
White girls.
• More than 80 percent of people with type 2 diabetes are overweight.1
• People who are overweight are more likely to suffer from high blood pressure, high levels of blood
fats, and LDL cholesterol -- all risk factors for heart disease and stroke. 1
• In 2010, African Americans were 70% less likely to engage in active physical activity as Non-
Hispanic Whites.

Business culture is an influential and fluid
entity that represents who you are as a
team, what you stand for, how you conduct
yourselves and how you treat your
participants. It will ultimately impact work
quality, job satisfaction and enjoyment, and
employee retention; it will also help define your
brand in the customer’s eyes. While company
culture is important to any business, in a service
industry that exists to help people achieve their
health, fitness and sporting goals, a positive and
constructive culture is very influential.

Lab 1 1 hour/ 1 session
Orientation: Introduction to the Fitness Experience. Fill out Health form, Fitness and
Wellness Assessment forms. *Includes participant response to physical and environmental
change, as well as, behaviors to reveal habits, barriers, self image and challenges with current
plan.

• During the X Wellness Experience tour participants explore all that the Wellness Center
has to offer. This method allows the participant to identify their favorite exercise
methods, build confidence in the fitness areas and learn to take care of equipment
while walking a new path to wellness.
• Create personal fitness plan to include Group Fitness Classes and Recreational activity
to best meet individuals goals. Personal training is best suited for specialized training.
• Check-in Sessions to indicate milestones
• The real work begins! Incorporate other dimensions of wellness elements to support
behavioral change. Based on their goals create accountability and milestones.
• Use every opportunity to create meaningful and pleasurable experiences to promote
fitness for life.

Lab 3 4 hours/4 sessions
X Wellness Experience Tour, Lifestyle
Management and Exercise Prescription
• Standard fitness assessment will be
administered
• Participants will observe group fitness
classes, group sessions and intramural activity
before their initial participation. Upon the first
day of physical activity, participants will test the
new activity for 15-30 minutes and consult with
wellness coach/PT. In addition, participants will
learn how to operate various cardio equipment
and use safety precautions as a part of
cardiovascular assessment lab.
• Participants will learn how to take their heart rate
and work within their aerobic target heart rate
zone, THR.
• Group fitness instructors should include lead a
heart rate check during all cardio classes to
keep participants aware of their heart rate
training zones.
• During strength training assessment and lab
sessions, participants will learn to use
equipment correctly and safely. In addition, they
will take sculpting classes that offer consistency
to National Standards and offer maximum
benefits.(see slide 30 )

Biweekly-Maximum/ 1.5 - 2 hours
• Coach/Trainer will conduct participant
consultations. Research, surveys and
questionnaires should be available to extract
data in advance. Use data from the participants
lab experiences to create a personalized
prescription to include a X Wellness Experience
Model and flexible contingency plans. Devise
action plans and accountability contract
• X Wellness Experience Model includes Body
Pump and the wellness component of lifestyle
management. Body Pump is used as a platform
to generate results
• Structure fitness models to meet all areas
according to National Standards to include the
following:
• Cardiovascular conditioning

Policy Structure:
• Fitness Assessment:
• Wear comfortable, athletic-type clothing (i.e. shorts,
t-shirt, and athletic shoes).
• Drink plenty of fluids 24-hours preceding the
assessment to ensure normal hydration.
• Avoid food, tobacco, alcohol, and caffeine at least 3
hours before assessment.
• Avoid exercise or strenuous activity before the
assessment on the day of testing.
• Get an adequate amount of sleep (6 to 8 hours) the
night before the test.
• Inform your Coach/PT about any medication and/or
other supplements you are taking (take recommended
physician dosage the day of assessment).

Participant receives summary of their current physical
fitness status. This summary can be used to plan a
workout program and formulate a personalized
exercise prescription provided by Wellness Coach/PT

prior to consultation
• Create Coach/PT Evaluations and make them
available to all participants.

made available for the community.
• Participants are matched with Coach/PTs
based on availability, goals, and preferences
provided on Labs.
• Participants are not guaranteed a Coach/PT.
• Once matched, participants should be
contacted by Wellness Coach/PT within 5
business days by electronic.
• An Orientation, and Coach/PT Introduction
Letter should be emailed prior to visit.
• Correspondence for Group Sessions, Labs.
Fitness Assessment, initial consultation, Lab 1
and 2 should be completed before
beginning the participant’s first training
session.
• A personal Fitness Assessment and
Consultation are always included with all
training packages even if the college allows
paid private sessions.
• Personalized exercise prescriptions and
fitness programs will be written based on the
data collected in Lab assessments and
consultation.
• All Assessments and specialty training
sessions last 1 hour.
• All Check in sessions last 30 – 60 minutes.

Contract/Letter of Agreement
Once matched with a Coach/PT and a mutual
agreement has been made outlining the terms
of the actual training program. Participant
should be required to acknowledge in writing
with a signature, and submit the official Letter
of Agreement to include Confidentiality &
Coach/PT Evaluation.
• All information regarding program and
progress should be kept confidential and
remain in one department participant file for at
least 2 years following the cessation of
participation in the program.
• Staff should attend workshop to adhere to
HIPAA guidelines to protect vital health
information given. Information should not
be discussed with anyone other than
assigned Coach/PT.
• At the completion of every semester and/or at
the cessation of involvement with the Wellness
program, participants evaluate Coach/PT on a
number of areas.
• Policy for running late for a training, Lab or
consult session. Staff are only required to wait
10 minutes before that session is forfeited.
• If a participant is late, the session will only last
until the end of hour for which that session
was scheduled.

• If a participant needs to cancel, he/she is to
directly notify the Wellness Scheduler or contact
Coach/PT directly a minimum of 2 hours prior to
the scheduled session time.
• If a participant does not give his/her Coach/PT at
least a 2 hour notice, that session is forfeited and
will not be rescheduled.
• If a participant misses two (2) scheduled
sessions, the participant contract is forfeited.
• Participants will receive credit for any training
session cancelled by the Coach/PT, or due to
uncontrollable circumstances (i.e. severe
weather, power outages), or personal
emergencies. A missed workout session must be
rescheduled within 7 days or the bonus will be
waived.
• Individuals who have any of the following
conditions will be required to have a Medical
Clearance and Physician's Consent form before
beginning a Personal Training program:
– Hypertension (High Blood Pressure
>145/95mmHG)
– Hyperlipidemia (Cholesterol > 220 mg/dl or
a total cholesterol-to-HDL ratio of > 5.0)
– Diabetes
– Past or present history of Heart Disease
– Abnormal resting EKG
– Acute systemic infection, accompanied by
fever, body aches, or swollen lymph glands
– Other conditions that the Coach/PT may
deem to present an unreasonable risk to
participant’s health if he/she were to
participate in a fitness program.

Adults spend 60 percent or more of their waking hours sedentary, according to a 2010 review of numerous studies over the past decade, conducted by a group

Students demonstrate stretches to relieve chronic
lower back pain.
Students demonstrate how to prevent stress in on the
lower back knees and hips during excessive sitting and
standing.
It might be time to shift the goal for obesity treatment away from just weight loss and BMI to include body fat reduction and a better understanding of nutrition.

Students use critical thinking skills to determine their caloric expenditure to improve health.
Students decrease their body fat percentage by 2%
with increased exercise expenditure over 13 weeks.
Students determine the number of calories needed to

With human function, optimal body-wide tension needs to be sensitive to and stimulated by changes in magnitude, angle and rate of loading (Huijing, 2007)
Students improve core stability that translates to improved fitness and daily activities.

Situation Analysis • The latest statistics confirm that more than half of all Americans are overweight or obese; a startling one out of five children ages 5 to 17 is obese; approximately 28 million adults are dieting to lose weight and another 23 million think they should be. An estimated 40 billion dollars is spent annually on diet books, products, and services. Business culture is an influential and fluid entity that represents who you are as a team, what you stand for, how you conduct yourselves and how you treat your participants. Fill out Health form, Fitness and Wellness Assessment forms. *Includes participant response to physical and environmental change, as well as, behaviors to reveal habits, barriers, self image and challenges with current plan. Lab 3 4 hours/4 sessions X Wellness Experience Tour, Lifestyle Management and Exercise Prescription • Standard fitness assessment will be administered • Participants will observe group fitness classes, group sessions and intramural activity before their initial participation. Upon the first day of physical activity, participants will test the new activity for 15-30 minutes and consult with wellness coach/PT. In addition, participants will learn how to operate various cardio equipment and use safety precautions as a part of cardiovascular assessment lab. • Participants will learn how to take their heart rate and work within their aerobic target heart rate zone, THR. • Group fitness instructors should include lead a heart rate check during all cardio classes to keep participants aware of their heart rate training zones. • During strength training assessment and lab sessions, participants will learn to use equipment correctly and safely. In addition, they will take sculpting classes that offer consistency to National Standards and offer maximum benefits.(see slide 30 ) Wellness Proposal - Submitted by F. Love 11.1.13
  • 30. Lab 4 Personal Wellness Sessions Biweekly-Maximum/ 1.5 - 2 hours • Coach/Trainer will conduct participant consultations. Research, surveys and questionnaires should be available to extract data in advance. Use data from the participants lab experiences to create a personalized prescription to include a X Wellness Experience Model and flexible contingency plans. Devise action plans and accountability contract • X Wellness Experience Model includes Body Pump and the wellness component of lifestyle management. Body Pump is used as a platform to generate results • Structure fitness models to meet all areas according to National Standards to include the following: • Cardiovascular conditioning • Weight reduction • Muscle building • Sport-specific training • General muscle tone and fitness • Body sculpting and toning • Rehabilitation from injury • 3 week, 6 week and 12 week programs • Participant should have opportunity to assess Coach/Trainer and fitness experience Wellness Proposal - Submitted by F. Best Practices Policy Structure: • Fitness Assessment: • Wear comfortable, athletic-type clothing (i.e. shorts, t-shirt, and athletic shoes). • Drink plenty of fluids 24-hours preceding the assessment to ensure normal hydration. • Avoid food, tobacco, alcohol, and caffeine at least 3 hours before assessment. • Avoid exercise or strenuous activity before the assessment on the day of testing. • Get an adequate amount of sleep (6 to 8 hours) the night before the test. • Inform your Coach/PT about any medication and/or other supplements you are taking (take recommended physician dosage the day of assessment). Fitness Assessments Include • Free service assessments include evaluation of the following: • Height • Weight • Resting Heart Rate • Resting Blood Pressure • Body Composition • Hamstring Flexibility • Hand Grip Strength • Cardiorespiratory Endurance (VO2 max) Participant receives summary of their current physical fitness status. This summary can be used to plan a workout program and formulate a personalized exercise prescription provided by Wellness Coach/PT • A Medical History Questionnaire • Informed Consent for Testing should be completed prior to consultation • Create Coach/PT Evaluations and make them available to all participants.   • 33. Wellness Program Structure What should people expect? What do we do? Add value to one-on-one sessions. Program and services should be printed and made available for the community. • Participants are matched with Coach/PTs based on availability, goals, and preferences provided on Labs. • Participants are not guaranteed a Coach/PT. • Once matched, participants should be contacted by Wellness Coach/PT within 5 business days by electronic. • An Orientation, and Coach/PT Introduction Letter should be emailed prior to visit. • Correspondence for Group Sessions, Labs. Fitness Assessment, initial consultation, Lab 1 and 2 should be completed before beginning the participant’s first training session. • A personal Fitness Assessment and Consultation are always included with all training packages even if the college allows paid private sessions. • Personalized exercise prescriptions and fitness programs will be written based on the data collected in Lab assessments and consultation. • All Assessments and specialty training sessions last 1 hour. • All Check in sessions last 30 – 60 minutes.   • 34. Best Practices (continued) Contract/Letter of Agreement Once matched with a Coach/PT and a mutual agreement has been made outlining the terms of the actual training program. Participant should be required to acknowledge in writing with a signature, and submit the official Letter of Agreement to include Confidentiality & Coach/PT Evaluation. • All information regarding program and progress should be kept confidential and remain in one department participant file for at least 2 years following the cessation of participation in the program. • Staff should attend workshop to adhere to HIPAA guidelines to protect vital health information given. Information should not be discussed with anyone other than assigned Coach/PT. • At the completion of every semester and/or at the cessation of involvement with the Wellness program, participants evaluate Coach/PT on a number of areas. • Policy for running late for a training, Lab or consult session. Staff are only required to wait 10 minutes before that session is forfeited. • If a participant is late, the session will only last until the end of hour for which that session was scheduled.   • 35. • If a participant needs to cancel, he/she is to directly notify the Wellness Scheduler or contact Coach/PT directly a minimum of 2 hours prior to the scheduled session time. • If a participant does not give his/her Coach/PT at least a 2 hour notice, that session is forfeited and will not be rescheduled. • If a participant misses two (2) scheduled sessions, the participant contract is forfeited. • Participants will receive credit for any training session cancelled by the Coach/PT, or due to uncontrollable circumstances (i.e. severe weather, power outages), or personal emergencies. A missed workout session must be rescheduled within 7 days or the bonus will be waived. • Individuals who have any of the following conditions will be required to have a Medical Clearance and Physician's Consent form before beginning a Personal Training program: – Hypertension (High Blood Pressure >145/95mmHG) – Hyperlipidemia (Cholesterol > 220 mg/dl or a total cholesterol-to-HDL ratio of > 5.0) – Diabetes – Past or present history of Heart Disease – Abnormal resting EKG – Acute systemic infection, accompanied by fever, body aches, or swollen lymph glands – Other conditions that the Coach/PT may deem to present an unreasonable risk to participant’s health if he/she were to participate in a fitness program. Adults spend 60 percent or more of their waking hours sedentary, according to a 2010 review of numerous studies over the past decade, conducted by a group of researchers from Australia and the United States. (Most of the data were gathered by connecting people to accelerometers to measure how long they are still. Students demonstrate how to prevent stress in on the lower back knees and hips during excessive sitting and standing. It might be time to shift the goal for obesity treatment away from just weight loss and BMI to include body fat reduction and a better understanding of nutrition. (Journal of the American Medical Association, 2012:307 [1], 47-55). Students use critical thinking skills to determine their caloric expenditure to improve health. Students decrease their body fat percentage by 2% with increased exercise expenditure over 13 weeks. Students determine the number of calories needed to make changes in their weight based on caloric intake and exercise expenditure. With human function, optimal body-wide tension needs to be sensitive to and stimulated by changes in magnitude, angle and rate of loading (Huijing, 2007) Students improve core stability that translates to improved fitness and daily activities.
