What are the business impacts of social learning?
Social learning is a fundamental shift in the way people work, collaborate, and learn within an organization. Social learning accelerates and broadens the reach and potential of both the individual and the organization.
Gartner says that “Today’s workplace is diverse, distributed and full of context shifts. Investing in collaborative business practices is essential to productivity and competitive advantage.” And Mzinga has defined social learning as learning through your interactions with others and through the knowledge and expertise with others.
Mzinga was the first company to bring a platform to the market that includes tightly integrated formal and social learning components. Let’s talk about why we did that. First, we recognized that the nature of human communication has changed in the past century.
Second, we recognized that the workforce has changed and will continue to change.
Third, we recognized that learning investments have been out of balance with the return on organizational learning efforts. In this study done by Jay Cross, it was determined that most people learn through informal means; and yet most organizations are not investing in informal or social learning.
And fourth, we recognized that we need to insert the social back into web based training and back into the learning management system.
Why is it important for you to care about social learning?
Because if you are investing only in traditional learning, then you are wasting some of your money. The American Society for Training & Development has proven that 60% of material can be forgotten 24 hours after a formal class is given. Think of that as 6 dollars lost for every 10 spent.
The ASTD also found that learners who engage in interactive, engaged learning on the web score 15% better on tests than students who attend live classes.
And the US Department of Labor has discovered that an approach of social learning with formal learning allows learners to complete tasks 30% more accurately, spend 28% more of their work week being productive, and perform tasks 41% faster compared with formal learning alone.
In fact, social learning is fast becoming the primary delivery method for organizations. According to a study done by McLean and Company, social collaborative learning is projected to go up 170%. These same companies are expecting to decrease investments in instructor led training and increase elearning offerings.
That investment will be money well spent. Social learning investments are tied to productivity and efficiency gains; revenue and retention opportunities; and customer experience benefits.
