Carlsberg UK is offering a second one-year fixed term job to a Northampton Business School student, Luke Tate, based on the positive experience with his first year placement. This provides Carlsberg with access to student talent and ideas while giving students valuable work experience. Luke is helping with implementing a new learning and development system at Carlsberg and says the experience has been "worth its weight in gold." Northampton Business School supports similar placements through its placement year scheme.

Carlsberg UK: Tapping into Talent
1. Businesswise/May 2010 /
Spring Edition
Local company Carlsberg UK are
currently offering a second one year
fixed term job to a Northampton
Business School student as a result of
the very positive experience gained
this year with NBS student Luke Tate.
This approach provides Carlsberg UK
with the opportunity to tap into the
talent and drive of an undergraduate
student and the fresh ideas that come
from recent academic study. It also
provides the undergraduate with an
opportunity to develop essential work
skills whilst undertaking an existing
role and making a real contribution
to the operations of a complex
organisation.
Mick Fraher, Change Leader Employee
development said of the current UoN
student at Carlsberg UK:
âLuke is helping with the
facilitation and implementation of
a new Learning and Development
infrastructure here at Carlsberg
UK. Luke has brought a fresh set
of eyes into the forefront of our
business, sharing new methods and
techniques.â
Luke Tate, Change Coordinator at
Carlsberg and undergraduate on the
BA Business degree
programme
describes his
experience at
Carlsberg UK as:
âWorth its
weight in Gold;
experiencing
the world of
work gives us a
strong advantage
as graduate
employees.â
This type of partnership between
industry and university is offered
through an NBS Placement
Year scheme; employers recruit
undergraduates as a paid employee
on a full-time, one year fixed term
contract offering the undergraduate
the opportunity to make a real
contribution to the business. The
University supports both employer
and student during this Placement
Year.
Dr Brooks (Dean of Northampton
Business School) said; âNorthampton
Business School is committed to
creating these types of partnerships
with local employers from
all sectors of business
as they can contribute
to employer success
which in turn supports
the prosperity of the
local community.â

Prize Fund
NBS is delighted to announce that
the first year prize for our module
âIntroducing Social Enterpriseâ (for
those wishing to take forward their
social enterprise idea into second
year) has been increased (from
ÂŁ500) to ÂŁ2,500 plus non-financial
support from UnLtd to get the
venture up and running! This is a
very prestigious prize invested in
by Unltd, the foundation for social
entrepreneurs, and HEFCE.
Students from The Division of
Marketing and Entrepreneurship have
taken the opportunity (since 2005)
to visit the âBig Appleâ as part of an
annual New York Study Tour.
The 2010 study tour included behind
the scenes visits to a wide range of
companies both large and small,
including broadcaster CNN, NYâs
marketing company NYC&CO, Nike
and designer Tommy Hilfiger.
The students also were tasked with
a range of individual study activities
which they would use when back in
the UK. This included the use of flip
cameras to record aspects of the
study tour and NYC for inclusion into
presentations and exhibitions as part of
a module assessment.
Students are encouraged to engage
with the company visits as much as
possible, including reading up on
companies in advance of the study tour
and bringing along their contact details
and CVâs to those companies with
whom they wish to apply for
an internship. So far we have had a
number of students using the study tour
contacts for work placements including:
⢠2009 BA Entertainment Marketing
student secured a summer
placement while in NY.
⢠2010 BA Entertainment Marketing
attended the first study tour
day and was visited by placement
supervisor.
⢠BA Fashion Marketing student who
attended the tour for a second year
is in the process of negotiating an
internship at Tommy Hilfiger.
Other activities across the week
included a student night out, organised
by BA Entertainment Marketing
student, Trevor Price (this activity
fulfilled an element of his Events
Management coursework).
The planning for the 2011 study tour
is already well underway. If you are
interested in joining next yearâs trip,
and you are taking at least one MKT
module next year, then please contact
either kate.pascoe@northampton.ac.uk
or sally.laurie@northampton.ac.uk for
more details.

Just before the Easter break,
some of our year two Marketing
Communications Students presented
their Student Exhibition in the
Consortium area of the Library.
Working in groups they were set the task of project
managing their exhibitions â from the branding and
promotion through to building and manning their
exhibition stands. An exercise which tested their ability
to work in teams and organisational skills to the limit,
some finishing their stands with seconds to spare!
The exhibition was combined with the
Annual Lecture by London agency
TEQUILA in conjunction with the
Chartered Institute of Marketing. On
the subject of marketing using Social
Networking, Liz Baines from Tequila
gave an entertaining and insightful
lecture.
Tim Marin, Chair of the
Northamptonshire branch for the
Chartered Institute of Marketing
said; âThe event was great in that it
brought together future marketing
talent with marketing practitioners
from Northampton. The evening
gave the marketing students from
the University the opportunity to
showcase their business ideas,
their talent and what they had
learnt on their marketing degrees.
Events like this are fundamental in
promoting marketing as a career
choice and enable the students to
receive feedback from marketing
professionals. Both students and
marketing professionals then learnt
about social media marketing in a
seminar run by a leading London
agencyâ.
The combined nature of the event
meant that the student exhibition
was attended by marketers from
industry â a target audience for
students seeking placements.
Future is Bright
Creative Bakery: Kelly McNeil, Milena Kuzminska, Wirginia
Kaczmarek, Lucinda Richardson and Miruna Eliza Ionescu
Entertainment News Network: Hyungeun Cho, Micara Manning,
Hannah Pendleton, Samantha Hall and Trevor Price
Sally Laurie who orchestrated the event said: âAs ever, the
exhibition is a valuable learning experience for the students.
This year I was particularly delighted that as a direct result
of the exhibition, two of the students gained placements â
which will make a significant impact on their employability.â
Helen Cooper, Marketing Manager - Travis Perkins & Hire
commented:
âI attended a CIM event at the University and prior to
the presentation I attended the student exhibition for
Advertising, Design and PR with the students. I was quite
impressed by some of the students I met and this has
prompted me to consider taking a marketing student into
the department as an intern for 6 to 12 months.â

3. Every year, NBS welcomes a number of Industry Professionals who deliver guest lectures and
engage with students on organisational specific project work. Students receive invaluable advice and
guidance from the speaker and, in return, undertake projects designed by the organisation which
align with their key objectives and aims. Lectures this quarter have included:
Retail Trust
John McDermott, Development
Director, of the Retail Trust
recently gave an inspired
presentation to Dave Larkanâs
retail Merchandising class. The
Retail Trust is the only charity
helping current, past and future
employees across the whole of
the retail sector. They provide
the right people to talk to retail
employees in the language they
understand. The trust offers a
helpline, hardship grants, debt
advice, counselling, redundancy
help, educational bursaries and
retirement housing. Retailers
whose staff feel wanted and
secure are better able to deliver
the kind of service that creates
a competitive advantage for the
company.
Guest lectures â working

Tenant Active
Systems
Robin Russell of Tenant Active
Systems gave a very informative
lecture followed by a question
and answer session for the Retail
Merchandising group. Robin spoke
with authority about retail crime
and measures available to retailers
to minimise this huge problem. The
students were able to inform their
reflective portfolio with first hand
quality information. Speakers like
Robin are an essential part of this
moduleâs learning and teaching
student experience.
In a joint event (with the Institute of
Directors) NBS and the Universityâs
Knowledge Exchange organised a
Question Time style panel event. Local
management writer and author Tom Lloyd
gave a presentation on his new book
âBusiness at a Crossroads: The Crisis of
Corporate Leadershipâ which was then
discussed in a lively session by a panel
drawn for all aspects of local business and
an audience of over 60 people. Chaired
by Milan Shah, Director of Virani Food
Products Ltd, the panellists included:
Mr Philip Bruce, Group MD, Scott
Bader Limited; Mr David Kennedy, CEO,
Northampton Borough Council; Mr Peter
Larkins, MD, Arnold Engineering Plastics
Limited; Mr Jeremy Wood, Divisional
Director, Nationwide and Mr Daniel
Perkin, The University of Northampton
Debating Society
Derngate
Theatre
Martin Sutherland, CEO of Northamptonâs
Derngate Theatre, entertained two groups
of first year students in February, spending
one hour with NBSâs Business Environment
class on the external factors affecting the
Derngate and a second hour with the
Introduction to Management class on his
role since becoming CEO. He provided a
comprehensive and sincere insight into his
job and into the ÂŁ8 million pound business
he runs, of which only 15% comes from
grants & subsidies, Martin revealed how he
had completely revamped and streamlined
the management structure as well as
many anecdotes about what it takes to
run an operation with so many different
stakeholders, including highly talented
creative artists. Martin is keen to develop
closer links with NBS, and a project has just
started to write a strategy & leadership
case study about the Derngate led by
Adrian Pryce (NBS) and supported by
Khooshyal Callika.
Northampton
Town Centre
Management
Derrick Simpson, the Northampton
Town Centre Manager, briefed our Retail
Marketing and Retail Planning students
in the New Year about the suitability of
Northampton for small retail businesses
survival. The students are writing reports
that require insight data into how
Northampton compares with other similar
towns in the UK. Derrick provided this
insight and has made available informative
data to underpin the comparisons.
Derrick also gave details of the proposed
development of the Grosvenor Centre and
the ongoing development of the Market
Square and Abingdon Street. We are
indebted to Derrick for giving up his time
to give a sense of ârealityâ to the reports/
assessments that the students are
working on.

Debenhams
Carl Menard, Northampton branch manager of
Debenhams presented a client brief to 40 of our Retail
Planning students earlier this year. The students are
required to write a report that addresses a number of
criteria including: whether or not Northampton has a
fashion/shopping future, which customers to target, what
Debenhams can do to negate their poor premises in
Northampton and what training their staff need to deliver
a better customer experience. Carl provided a highly
informative session and students were tasked with a live
project for a live client.
Apprentice Finalist
We were delighted to host a guest lecture
by Apprentice 2008 finalist and business
woman Claire Young in February.
Claire addressed an audience of
Northampton Business School students,
staff and University alumni about her
career, how to start your own business and
what it was like to be in the boardroom
with Sir Alan Sugar!
Claire, who runs her business âElegant
Venuesâ from Northamptonshire,
commented:
ââSince starting a business in Daventry, I
have been keen to get involved in the local
Northants community so I was delighted
when the University contacted me to visit
and talk to the students at Northampton
Business School. After thoroughly
enjoying my university experience, I find
it refreshing to take a couple of hours out
of the âbusiness worldâ to step back into
education and appreciate the grounding it
gave me. The evening was a great success
and judging from the emails Iâve received
since, it appears to have inspired the
students! I work with universities across
the country on a regular basis and the
quality of Northants students I met during
the event really stood out - they were
articulate, proactive and passionate - I
have no doubt they will go on to succeed!ââ
The Treehouse Company
Tamika McKenzie a University of
Northampton Business School
graduate and the Marketing
Manager for The TreeHouse
Company here in
Northamptonshire recently
delivered an excellent âliveâ client
brief to our E-Retailing students.
She gave an overview of the
company and what it hopes to achieve as a business through developing
its website. Our students, as âconsultantsâ, are tasked with evaluating
the website and then in the light of Tamikaâs brief plan to offer
recommendations (a report) by reflecting on current e-retailing theory
and industry best practice. Studentâs will produce some âout of the boxâ
reports/recommendations.

4. New International
Student Society
(nGBN)
The NBS Northampton Global Business Network (nGBN)
was inaugurated in October 2009. Currently it has a
committee comprising five international students and
two faculties and is adopting a student-led agenda. The
Committee has met half a dozen times already and drawn
up a strong programme of activities, which are now well
under way. An NBS-supported international student visit
to a Graduate Careers Fair at the NEC took place in late
October and a trip to Cadburyâs was enjoyed by many
in December 2009. Students learnt about the history of
Cadbury, its current product range and its European and
global markets in an interactive and entertaining way. The
issues surrounding Kraftâs takeover of Cadbury and the
resultant implications for Cadburyâs corporate governance
and global strategy development were also discussed.
Students were introduced to the Cadbury familyâs history
of industrial philanthropy during this part of the day,
illustrated by viewing a number of the buildings that had
been erected on the site during the nineteenth century for
the welfare of the companyâs workers.
NBS recently won the emda tender
to deliver the Route to Market 2010
programme. This contract, worth
ÂŁ115,000, requires NBS to recruit
120 SMEs from across the East
Midlands and deliver a programme
of five workshops in each county of
the region. This is the second such
project secured by NBS in the face of
considerable competition. The project
has already engaged in excess of
the required participant SMEs and is
well towards meeting/exceeding its
objectives.
Delivering UG
provision in Dubai
NBS has been approved to deliver
its BA (Honours) Business &
Management (Top up) in Knowledge
Village, Dubai, in partnership with
the Centre for Executive Education
(CEE). It is expected that delivery
will commence in September with
âfly-in facultyâ leading the delivery,
supported by the virtual learning
environment.
Enterprise in School
NBS has recently recruited a sizeable cohort of 33 students from the sixth forms
of three county based schools â Brooke Weston, Chenderit and Sir Christopher
Hatton - to take an accredited undergraduate module in enterprise development.
This is now the fourth year we have managed this highly successful project
supporting the widening participation and enterprise ambitions of our sub-
regional community.
Higher Ambitions
The Department for Business Innovation and Skills âHigher Ambitionsâ report,
outlining government strategy for HE and published in late 2009, made explicit
reference to sector good practice by illustrating the NBS new PG Certificate in
Enhancing International Student Experience.

University Professor receives Queenâs
Award for Enterprise Promotion
Professor Simon Denny, Associate
Dean at Northampton Business
School, has been awarded the
highly prestigious âQueenâs Award
for Enterprise Promotionâ, for his
outstanding and significant role
in promoting enterprise skills and
attitudes. Along with other Enterprise
Award winners, he will attend a
reception at Buckingham Palace on 12
July to celebrate his achievement.
The annual Queenâs Award for
Enterprise Promotion, which was first
awarded in 2006, rewards individuals
who have played an outstanding
and significant role in promoting the
growth of business enterprise and
entrepreneurial skills and attitudes in
others in the UK.
The Award recognises Simonâs work
and support to would-be entrepreneurs
in Northamptonshire through a range
of activities, including the development
of the Business Creation Partnership,
which influenced the development of
new business start up support in the
East Midlands. Simon also led the
team that delivered the Business Link
Start Up Service in Northamptonshire
from 2007 â 2010.
Since 2004 Simonâs enterprise
promotion activities, carried out
in addition to his full-time paid
responsibilities, have benefitted
significant numbers of women,
individuals from ethnic minority
groups, disabled people, ex-offenders
and people in rural communities.
Since 2004, of the 1,950 new
businesses set up in Northamptonshire
as a result of Simonâs initiatives, 91%
have proved successful for more than
12 months.
Simon explains:
âI got started in enterprise promotion
in 2004 when I became aware
the European Social Fundâs Equal
programme was inviting bids for
over ÂŁ1 million to help people
from disadvantaged groups start
businesses. I applied successfully, and
the resulting project was to create a
consistent business start-up service
throughout Northamptonshire.
âI knew at the time that where you
lived in the county dictated the
quality and quantity of support you
received, with help based on postcode
rather than need. This seemed
wrong and, knowing The University
of Northamptonâs strong âwidening
participationâ agenda, I felt there was
an opportunity to do something very
different.
âNorthamptonshire and the East
Midlands now have a consistent
business start-up support service.
We have also established very good
relationships with local authorities
who see the University as one of the
key routes through which they can
achieve economic development and
social inclusion.
âIn terms of helping people â one of
the things Iâm most proud of is our
work with HM Wellingborough Prison.
We sign up interested prisoners as
students of the University, and then
take them through a module from our
Foundation Degree in Enterprise called
âEntrepreneurial Skills Developmentâ.
âThe students work hard and pass by
constructing plans for their personal
development and intended business.
Despite all the hurdles we face in
working within the prison system - we
canât take any computers or software
in, or sometimes the prison will just
shut for security reasons - weâve
now had 70 prisoners participate
and very few have failed. All work is
marked independently and results
have been comparable with our full
time students. We hold graduation
ceremonies in the prison and I know
the students get something out of this.
When we ran our last information day,
we had some of the ex-offenders whoâd
been through the scheme come back
to meet and encourage new starters
on the course.
On a more personal level Simon is
clearly thrilled at the prospect of
receiving the Queenâs Award for
Enterprise Promotion. He adds:
âIâm genuinely honoured. I remember
standing outside Buckingham Palace
with my mum and dad when I was
eight to wave at the Queen. The
thought of going inside is genuinely
quite amazing.
âI think this Award is a real
benchmark. It means what weâve
been doing has been good enough
to reach this level of recognition. We
have a three year strategy that will
embed us even more closely with local
authorities on economic development
and social inclusion. Weâve also just
set up our own social enterprise â 3E,
based in Kettering, Northamptonshire
â and we will continue to develop
where there is a social need in the
county.â
Customer First
Accreditation
The NBS funded project unit (FPU)
(externally now referred to as the
Northamptonshire Enterprise Skills
Agency (NESA)) was awarded
Customer First accreditation
recently.
This is a nationally recognised quality
accreditation which recognises that
the FPU has policies and procedures
which ensure that clients are valued;
services are monitored and are of
a significant level of quality. It also
recognises that in everything we do
we consider and put the client first.
This accreditation is for the unit itself.
We consider this to be the most
appropriate of the various national
accreditations (e.g. IiP, ISO9001 etc)
for a unit like ours within a school/
university, given the type of work we
do and our objectives going forward.
It represents a major achievement
for the team, which is led by Wray
Irwin, and recognises their hard
work and their commitment to our
customers.

5. Thursday 17th June at
Northampton Business
School âNew Frontiers or
Action Replaysâ
Together with The Academy of Marketing and the
Chartered Institute of Marketing, the event is to
be a uniquely designed symposium for students,
practitioners and academics, to engage, gather
and debate current issues and opportunities in the
burgeoning field of Sports Marketing.
The University has recently launched a new degree
in the subject discipline (BA Hons Sports Marketing)
and we have had over a 100 plus applications for the
course for the next academic year.
Consumers and the general public are insatiable
and as a consequence Sport has become the elixir
of modern marketing trends. Sport is as much today
about front page news as it has been on the back
pages.
As a consequence sport has become big business,
a standalone entertainment industry and a mantra
for all things new generation lifestyle. Bill Shankly
famously remarked when asked âif football is a
matter of life and deathâ replied âno itâs much more
important than thatâ perhaps revealing a more
prophetic insight on future marketing opportunities
than even the statements of Marshall McLuhanâs
âglobal villageâ or Andy Warholâs âfifteen minutes of
fameâ.
Sports marketing is very much part of a new
âSporting Cultural Collusionâ bringing together
mutually beneficial themes, aims and objectives.
Associations and partnerships for new engagements
with consumers and customers alike are positively at
the forefront of this burgeoning interest in all aspects
of Sports Marketing.
As sport, entertainment and the media become
inextricably linked it is important to understand and
critique the way in which all stakeholders act. The
importance and therefore the significance of this
conference and symposium is immense. The debate,
discussions and argument will lead to the sports
marketing âethosâ becoming more pronounced and
embedded both, in study as well as practitioning
contexts. The workshops and plenary discussions
will reflect this and consider the roles and actions
of elite sports performers, their associates and
sponsors, governing bodies of sports, sports clubs/
organizations/ corporations, and the media.
The symposium will feature many active researchers
and academics in Marketing, Sports Marketing and
other relevant disciplines in Events and Marketing
Communications. Also in attendance will be many
Sports Marketing Practitioners, Agencies, Sporting
Organisations and Properties, as well as a number of
distinguished sporting stars.
Advanced registration is required, please contact
Jayne Roberts, Marketing Officer to reserve your
place; email business@northampton.ac.uk

Anna set up and ran an independent
commercial and training travel agency
at Loughborough College. Anna has
worked in various job roles in the
travel industry from 2001-2005
including retail travel for Midlands
Co-Op and Business travel for
Barclays Bank and Hogg Robinson.
She is currently completing an MA in
Cultural Events Management, and is
currently involved in research for a
sustainability project focussing on UK
and International music festivals.
Congratulations to Medical Research
Council (MRC) staff who gained the
externally accredited introductory
diploma in management; this huge
achievement was celebrated at an
award ceremony at MRC head office
on 4 March 2010. Professor Simon
Denny of Northampton Business
School (which accredits the course)
presented the awards, along with
John Jeans (Chief Operating Officer)
and Ted Smith (Director of Human
Resource).
Professor Denny presented data
that showed that the graduates had
exceeded the high standards already
attained by their predecessors. He
commented that: âthis cohort had
claimed the prize of being the highest
achieving group to graduate with
this certificate from the University of
Northamptonâ. Two of the graduates,
Drs Erik Werner and Guillermo de
la Cueva-Mendez, were awarded an
additional accolade, for averaging
over 85 per cent for all their
assignments, which Professor Simon
Denny remarked was: âthe best ever
performance by any delegates on
any Northampton corporate client
programmeâ.
The certificate is funded by the MRC
learning and development group
(LDG) and has attracted a wide
interest from across the MRC since
its initial start-up in 2007. Working
towards the certificate is no mean
feat, the programme spans 18
months and comprises the successful
completion of six modules which give
delegates the opportunity of gaining
up to date knowledge and skills in all
the key areas of management and
leadership. Each module requires
participants to complete work-based
assignments, thus ensuring that the
all the conceptual skills acquired
result in tangible changes back at
the workplace. The LDG team are
profiling course participants to show
how the theory and learning from
the certificate has led to successful
changes back at work.
The qualification is formally referred
to as the postgraduate certificate in
management and is the equivalent
to the first third of an MBA. The
course includes modules that help
participants understand more about
the role of the MRC as a public
sector organisation and about
financial management (MRC and
other models). Other modules help
to improve communication and
stakeholder management, highlighting
that dissemination of information is
crucial for organisational success.
Many of the modules have an MRC
âsponsorâ, people well placed in
the MRC who work with the course
tutors to update and give feedback
on current MRC policy and practice
which would be relevant to the
module. The programme now attracts
scientists in all positions across the
MRC, who wish to gain an accredited
management qualification and
modern management and leadership

back from a Personal Development Advisor.
Please give either your home or business
