nonprofit dedicated to preserving historic architecture in one of
Manhattan’s most notable neighborhoods. Taking its name from an early
20th century mansion built by industrialist Andrew Carnegie, Carnegie Hill
inhabits a swathe of the Upper East Side between 86th and 96th streets.
3. Efforts to Landmark the Church of St.
Thomas More
A current CHN initiative involves efforts to have the Church of St. Thomas
More, which was built in stages from 1870-1892, landmarked. The church is
built in the the Gothic Revival style and is part of a complex that includes
a chapel, rectory, bell tower, and parish house. With the New York
Archdiocese proposing the closure of the historic church, services may be
merged with the St. Ignatius Loyola parish on Park Avenue at 84th Street.
CHN supports landmark status for the church due to its long and vital
community role, as well as its historic significance. Well known parishioners
included Jacqueline Onassis Kennedy, and her son John Kennedy, Jr.’s
memorial service was held at the church.
