Dies ist erstaunlich: Das ist morgen!------NETGEAR is launching three new 10 Gigabit Base-T solutions. More generally, the initial impact of Base-T technology will likely be on: 10 Gigabit Ethernet switches and Network adapter cards. And then starting this year, we should see more 10GBase-T deployed directly on server and workstations motherboards. I’m putting up this global Server Ethernet Port Shipment forecast from Crehan Research:Here the technology takes a major step towards widespread deployment, as it starts to ship standard on volume low-end servers and workstations.Developments such as virtualization, cloud computing, and network consolidation and convergence have all contributed to this diversity of server networking needs. We expect a very strong ramp of 10G – because of Base-T – resulting in it becoming the eventual dominant server network connection by 2014. This is amazing: this is tomorrow!
If you look at the adoption of different speeds, a majority of networks have Gigabit and 10G is still growing in deployment. When it comes to choice, if you wanted 10G Copper switching solutions, up to now, you would have been limited by a fully managed configuration. In terms of the drivers for 10G Connectivity, the increase in mobility, voice and video combined with virtualisation and the doubling of data every 2 years (2X2), then you can see why 10G is needed. Bottlenecks are occurring in parts of the network not previously seen with Gigabit connectivity. As for barriers, 10GbE as a standard has been around for 10+ years, but adoption of 10G Copper (ratified in 2006) has been limited by a number of barriers. These are being broken down. So, 90% of servers will ship with 10G copper adapter connectivity options and more servers will incorporate 10G on the motherboard (LoM). In addition, power consumption has dropped with our 10G copper solution drawing comparable levels with the fibre equivalent, XSM7224S. Advances in reducing latency have resulted in 10GbE Copper solutions delivering between 2 and 4 micro seconds delay compared to even Gigabit Copper with a wider range of between 1 and 12 micro seconds. Unless you undertake automated trades or have High Performance Computing (HPC) needs, then 10GbE Copper will be more than suited to the masses. In terms of benefits, bottlenecks will be reduced. Existing copper cabling can be leveraged saving on rip and replace costs and customers will have the option to deploy 10G at their own pace with backwards compatibility with lower speeds switching in the network. The real breakthrough comes with pricing in addition to gains in power reduction and latency sensitivity. Competitive solutions of around $500 per 10G port are now being compared against our breakthrough pricing of $125 for entry level 10G switching, in the form of the ProSAFE PLUS XS708E. This brings the cost clearly within the realm of SMB customers. It also opens the doors for 10G to move beyond the core of the network into the aggregation / distribution layer. SMB’s can now deploy 10G solutions in the core of their network, where such speeds were considered the preserve of larger enterprises. With NETGEAR, we’ve 3 new exciting 10GbE Copper switches newly launched to make 2013 the year that 10G Copper finally starts to take off.

Das ist unsere große NETGEAR Unterschied und der heutigen Ankündigung erweitert deutlich unsere Marktführerschaft in zukunftssichere Netzwerk-Technologie Innovation in 10 Gigabit-Switching------NETGEAR’s fantastic new 10GBASE-T offerings range from as little as $125 per port to $250 per port on the top end, in stark comparison to the most aggressively priced 10GBASE-T solutions currently on the market, which can cost $380-$400 per port or even more.We can notice that all three Copper switches come at much lower price per port than our well-established Fiber 24-port solution XSM7224S: all other vendors in the market do price their Copper solutions at a much higher price than their Fiber solutions. This is our great NETGEAR difference and today’s announcement greatly expands our leadership in future-proof networking technology innovation in 10 Gigabit switching
So, is this a war – between Base-T and SFP+ ? Not really – but..Despite recent strong growth, annual shipments for 10 Gigabit Ethernet are still in the millions and comprise a small part of total connections. We all remember, that with prior speeds such as Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet, Base-T was a key technology in enabling the jump to volume deployment of 10s of millions of ports per year. We think one of the reasons for the relatively low volumes in 10 Gigabit Ethernet, despite it’s been available for over ten years, has been the slower arrival of 10GBase-T. However with these NETGEAR’s new announcements, this looks like it is about to change - and we expect to see a much greater impact from this technology going forward. The fact is: this extended time to market can be explained by the desire to integrate significant Latency and Power-efficiency enhancements into this technology.NETGEAR latest advances in hardware and software engineering show how ready 10G Base-T is, for mainstream deploymentsFor Power consumption, I’d like to highlight 10GBase-T uplinks energy efficiency on our M5300 Gigabit switch series – and the very low power consumption of our new 8-port and 12-port 10GBase-T solutions. For our latest M7100 series, 24-port Base-T consumption is actually very close to equivalent 24-port Fiber XSM7224S technology! For latency – it is a great achievement to see how 10GBase-T technology is now close to standard Gigabit Ethernet usual latency levels – absolutely OK for most of network and storage applications.
