5. There are 6 billion mobile subscriptions globally, &
1 billion smartphones in use
The first number is from the ITU (note
that many people have more than one
phone so this is not 6 billion people
with mobiles), and the second comes
from Strategy Analytics who estimate
that by the end of Q3 2012 there were
1.038 billion smartphones in use

6. Google is activating 1.3m Android devices a day
Google has revealed that it is activating
1.3 million Android devices a day, up
from 1 million a day in June. In
September the install base was 480m
users, so it must be over 500 million by
now

This rule of thumb was revealed in
testimony in the Apple-Samsung court
case in the US. This means that Apple
is likely sell over 200 million iPhone 5s

8. Apple has spent over $1bn advertising the iPhone
and iPad
People always assume that the product,
the reviews and buzz sell Apple
products, but they also advertise very,
very heavily – up to $200m per year

9. Smartphones influence 6% of UK in-store
purchases
Almost half of the UK’s smartphone
users have used their phones to
research product information before or
during a shopping visit, which means
that smartphones influence 6%, or over
£15 billion in UK sales. Slightly

10. Mobile accounts for 18% of Domino’s Pizza’s UK

hipsters, but these days 45% of the
pictures posted have no filter on them.

13. OwnFone – a cheap, basic, personalised phone
OwnFone is a very basic phone that is
capable of receiving calls, but only dialling
up to 12 preset numbers, that you
programme when you by it. It’s intended
as an emergency phone, or to give to
kids, and the battery lasts for up to a year
on one charge if not used

15. 8 million people saw Felix Baumgartner’s skydive live on

This makes it the most watched live
event ever on YouTube

16. The Daily Mail online is profitable
The Daily Mail is now the world’s most
visited English language newspaper
site, and has announced that it is
profitable, with total revenues are up
75% year on year

every day
Is Facebook planning a search product?
It’s easy to see why it might – currently
it gets over a billion search queries per
day, and one Facebook financial ‘Holy
Grail’ might be to try to answer these

eBooks and music – but Kellogg’s did it
in a physical store for the first time in
London in September to launch their
