5. Analysis
The Rolling Stone cover page does not have enough of the codes and
conventions that a magazine cover should have. This is because it does not
contain a barcode or the convergence (e.g. Twitter, Facebook, Instagram.) It also
does not give a specific date of the issue of the magazine. It only gives the season
when it was printed. Although I does give cover lines that also have star appeal
to people who may prefer other stars to read about. As well as Star appeal there
are also political issues that the magazine writes about, this also gives potential
readers something else to read about rather than what is going on in the lives of
the rich and famous. This also relates to Katz theory of gratification as it has Lady
GaGa on the front cover. This would attract her fans as it is about her. This could
also attract women as it is an empowering image of her holding the guns however
it could also attract men as she is dressed in a revealing and suggestive manner.
The Political agendas also relate back to the hypodermic syringe theory as they
are giving the readers an opinion so the readers would then use that opinion as a
base for their own. As well as that Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs theory comes into
this as social climbers will use this to form their own opinion and try to climb the
social ladder. Although because the magazine does not contain an convergence it
hinders the digital version of the magazine and the website that the magazine has.
But because of this it may suggest that this magazine is well established which
means that it does not need any convergence to promote it. But a bar code is
needed as that allows the customer to buy the magazine, the bar code may be on
6. Double Page Spread
Analysis
The large red L that covers the page
shows that she is the star and connotes
her dominance and power that she has.
The fact that it is red further connotes
that she has true passion for what she
does (which is making music.)
The use of step-down capitals
highlights the different subjects that are
being spoken about.
This gives a clear definition to the reader
where each question is.
Lady and GaGa are in different fonts.
This emphasizes the clear contrast in the
words. It also highlights the theatricality
of her personality.
The image that is used is in black and
white. She is wearing nothing but a chain
necklace. This is provocative which
follows her performance style. The fact
that the photo is in black and white
shows that she is attempting to bring the
vibe from the 80’s into modern day. This

7. Contents Page Analysis
The contents page of this magazine is very
regimented as it is clear that the text and
image are separate. This gives the contents
page a chic feel. It also follows the general
layout that is used for all of the magazines.
The masthead has some of the most
importance here because the O, the G, the U
and the E all go over the image. This gives the
8. Target Audience and USP
Target Audience
The target audience for my magazine are people who
are interested in rock and pop music. I think this
because they are both extremely popular genres of
music. I also am a fan of these genres which will help
me make a magazine that has the latest and some of
the most popular bands and artists. The age group
that I am aiming for are from 13 to 25-27 I think this
is a good age group as the younger audiences I feel
are more willing to spend more money on magazines
but 25-27 years old are more opinionated and will
have more views on the issues and articles that I
would make for magazine.
USP
The USP of my magazine is that it is going to feature
articles on the latest artists and upcoming artists in
the art world such as: Dairo Vargas and Millie Brown.
I think this will make my magazine unique because
not many magazines follow the latest trends in the art
world and follow the creativity of people.
9. Genre Research Page
The Inspiration for my magazine is “Rolling
Stone”. I chose this magazine because
they are different to other music
magazines. This is because they are
different to other music magazines as they
also include politics in their magazine. I
have used this idea but instead of politics I
have chosen art. This is because the art
scene is changing a lot and creative
expression is becoming more and more
evident now, not just in pop culture but
also in general creativity. I want to have art
as apart of my magazine because it is
something that is very personal to me as I
draw and paint in want to transfer that
passion into a magazine. The music that
my magazine will most likely write about is
pop music as it is a constantly changing
landscape. I feel that because of this I
10. Publisher Research Page
The Publisher of Rolling Stone magazine is
Wenner Publications. This was made by Jann
Wenner who is also the co-founder of Rolling
Stone. Jann Wenner is also the Publisher of Us
and Mens Journal magazine. One of the
magazines that Wenner Publications publishes
is Us magazine. It is on a weekly circulation. I
believe that the demographic for this magazine
is for girls that are from the age of 15 to 25. I
think this because the majority of the stories
that are on the website were about all the
celebrity gossip. had a pink colour theme.
Mens Journal magazine however has a
circulation of once a month. I believe that its
demographic are men aged from 25-50 who
are very health conscious and go to the gym.
11. Magazine of inspiration
I chose Vogue because it has a very classy and
simple feel to the magazine. I think this is because of
the clear boxing of colour. It is simple but effective
and helps direct the reader to the stories and helps
separate the image and the text. I also like they way
that the masthead is also placed onto the contents
page. It gives a sense that the magazine is
continuously stating their name, “Vogue”. The font of
the text stands out as it is very sleek. It also has the
most importance on the contents page because the g
of Vogue is overlapping the image. It is also the only
heading in black as well as it being the largest text on
the page.
I also like the position that the model is pulling. It is
dramatic and it has a sense of movement to it. I think
that the celebrity that I have chosen (Lady GaGa.)
would make a pose like this for a magazine spread. I
what makes this more dramatic is the use of lighting,
the dramatic shadows on the neck and cheek bone.
