This deck briefly outlines the work we did mapping the South African Twittersphere for the 2012 SAMRA conference, including some analyses we did based on the structure of the network. Specifically, we identified people with the potential for influence based on their betweeness centrality and Authority (HITS). In addition, we also used a modularity algorithm to identify 5 clearly distinct communities within the graph. The results are for interest-sake only and should be interpreted within the limitations of the data."

Online information propagates differently on the web, some of which can be viral. In this paper, first we introduce a simple standard deviation sigma levels based Tweet volume breakout definition, then we proceed to determine patterns of re-tweet network measures to predict whether a hashtag volume will breakout or not. We also developed a visualization tool to help trace the evolution of hashtag volumes, their underlying networks and both local and global network measures. We trained a random forest tree classifier to identify effective network measures for predicting hashtag volume breakouts. Our experiments showed that “local” network features, based on a fixed-sized sliding window, have an overall predictive accuracy of 76 %, where as, when we incorporate “global” features that utilize all interactions up to the current period, then the overall predictive accuracy of a sliding window based breakout predictor jumps to 83 %.

What is your talk about? This seminar will illustrate various social network analysis (SNA) techniques and measures and their applications to research problems in education. These applications will be illustrated from our own research utilising a range of SNA techniques. What are the key messages of your talk? We will cover some of the ways in which network data can be collected and utilised with other research data to examine the relationships between network measures and other attributes of individuals and organisations, and how it can be linked to other approaches in multiple methods studies. What are the implications for practice or research from your talk? SNA is an approach that draws from theories of social capital to study the relational ties that exist between actors or institutions in a specific context. Such ties might include learning exchanges or advice-seeking interactions. SNA techniques allow researchers to incorporate the interdependence of participants within their research questions, whereas many traditional techniques assume our participants, and their responses to our questions, are independent of one another.

What if instead of a query returning documents, you could alternatively return other keywords most related to the query: i.e. given a search for "data science", return me back results like "machine learning", "predictive modeling", "artificial neural networks", etc.? Solr’s Semantic Knowledge Graph does just that. It leverages the inverted index to automatically model the significance of relationships between every term in the inverted index (even across multiple fields) allowing real-time traversal and ranking of any relationship within your documents. Use cases for the Semantic Knowledge Graph include disambiguation of multiple meanings of terms (does "driver" mean truck driver, printer driver, a type of golf club, etc.), searching on vectors of related keywords to form a conceptual search (versus just a text match), powering recommendation algorithms, ranking lists of keywords based upon conceptual cohesion to reduce noise, summarizing documents by extracting their most significant terms, and numerous other applications involving anomaly detection, significance/relationship discovery, and semantic search. In this talk, we'll do a deep dive into the internals of how the Semantic Knowledge Graph works and will walk you through how to get up and running with an example dataset to explore the meaningful relationships hidden within your data.

ICWSM 2011 Tutorial Sebastien Heymann and Julian Bilcke Gephi is an interactive visualization and exploration software for all kinds of networks and relational data: online social networks, emails, communication and financial networks, but also semantic networks, inter-organizational networks and more. Designed to make data navigation and manipulation easy, it aims to fulfill the complete chain from data importing to aesthetics refinements and interaction. Users interact with the visualization and manipulate structures, shapes and colors to reveal hidden properties. The goal is to help data analysts to make hypotheses, intuitively discover patterns or errors in large data collections. In this tutorial we will provide a hands-on demonstration of the essential functionalities of Gephi, based on a real case scenario: the exploration of student networks from the "Facebook100" dataset (Social Structure of Facebook Networks, Amanda L. Traud et al, 2011). The participants will be guided step by step through the complete chain of representation, manipulation, layout, analysis and aesthetics refinements. Particular focus will be put on filters and metrics for the creation of their first visualizations. They will be incited to compare the hypotheses suggested by their own exploration to the results actually published in the academic paper afterwards. They finally will walk away with the practical knowledge enabling them to use Gephi for their own projects. The tutorial is intended for professionals, researchers and graduates who wish to learn how playing during a network exploration can speed up their studies. Sébastien Heymann is a Ph.D. Candidate in Computer Science at Université Pierre et Marie Curie, France. His research at the ComplexNetworks team focuses on the dynamics of realworld networks. He leads the Gephi project since 2008, and is the administrator of the Gephi Consortium. Julian Bilcke is a Software Engineer at ISC-PIF (Complex Systems Institute of Paris, France). He is a founder and a developer for the Gephi project since 2008.

Relationships are one of the most predictive indicators of behavior and preferences. Communities detection based on relationships is a powerful tool for inferring similar preferences in peer groups, anticipating future behavior, estimating group resiliency, finding hierarchies, and preparing data for other analysis. Centrality measures based on relationships identify the most important items in a network and help us understand group dynamics such as influence, accessibility, the speed at which things spread, and bridges between groups. Data scientists use graph algorithms to identify groups and estimate important entities based on their interactions. In this session, we'll cover the common uses of community detection and centrality measures and how some of the iconic graph algorithms compute values. We'll show examples of how to run community detection and centrality algorithms in Apache Spark including using the AggregateMessages function to add your own algorithms. You'll learn best practices and tips for tricky situations. For those that want to run graph algorithms in a graph platform, we'll also illustrate a few examples in Neo4j. Slides from T.J. Jankun-Kelly's IEEE VisWeek 2012 presentation on visualization for games. Electronic games are starting to incorporate in-game telemetry that collects data about player, team, and community performance on a massive scale, and as data begins to accumulate, so does the demand for effectively analyzing this data. We use examples from both old and new games of different genres to explore the theory and design space of visualization for games. Drawing on these examples, we define a design space for this novel research topic and use it to formulate design patterns for how to best apply visualization technology to games. We then discuss the implications that this new framework will potentially have on the design and development of game and visualization technology in the future.

Presentation from ACM AVI 2012 in Capri, Italy on gravity navigation. Gravity navigation (GravNav) is a family of multi-scale navigation techniques that use a gravity-inspired model for assisting navigation in large visual 2D spaces based on the interest and salience of visual objects in the space. GravNav is an instance of topology-aware navigation, which makes use of the structure of the visual space to aid navigation. We have performed a controlled study comparing GravNav to standard zoom and pan navigation, with and without variable-rate zoom control. Our results show a signiﬁcant improvement for GravNav over standard navigation, particularly when coupled with variable-rate zoom. We also report ﬁndings on user behavior in multi-scale navigation.

Slides from ACM CHI 2012 presentation given by Sohaib Ghani. Abstract: The most common techniques for navigating in multiscale visual spaces are pan, zoom, and bird’s eye views. However, these techniques are often tedious and cumbersome to use, especially when objects of interest are located far apart. We present the PolyZoom technique where users progressively build hierarchies of focus regions, stacked on each other such that each subsequent level shows a higher magnification. Correlation graphics show the relation between parent and child viewports in the hierarchy. To validate the new technique, we compare it to standard navigation techniques in two user studies, one on multiscale visual search and the other on multifocus interaction. Results show that PolyZoom performs better than current standard techniques.

Animated transitions are popular in many visual applications but they can be difficult to follow, especially when many objects move at the same time. One informal design guideline for creating effective animated transitions has long been the use of slow-in/slow-out pacing, but no empirical data exist to support this practice. We remedy this by studying object tracking performance under different conditions of temporal distortion, i.e., constant speed transitions, slow-in/slow-out, fast-in/fast-out, and an adaptive technique that slows down the visually complex parts of the animation. Slow-in/slow-out outperformed other techniques, but we saw technique differences depending on the type of visual transition.

Analysts are increasingly encountering datasets that are larger and more complex than ever before. Effectively exploring such datasets requires collaboration between multiple analysts, who more often than not are distributed in time or in space. Mixed-presence groupware provide a shared workspace medium that supports this combination of co-located and distributed collaboration. However, collaborative visualization systems for such distributed settings have their own cost and are still uncommon in the visualization community. We present Hugin, a novel layer-based graphical framework for this kind of mixed-presence synchronous collaborative visualization over digital tabletop displays. The design of the framework focuses on issues like awareness and access control, while using information visualization for the collaborative data exploration on network-connected tabletops. To validate the usefulness of the framework, we also present examples of how the Hugin toolkit can be used to implement new visualizations with access to these collaborative mechanisms.

Line graphs have been the visualization of choice for temporal data ever since the days of William Playfair (1759-1823), but realistic temporal analysis tasks often include multiple simultaneous time series. In this work, we explore user performance for comparison, slope, and discrimination tasks for different line graph techniques involving multiple time series. Our results show that techniques that create separate charts for each time series--such as small multiples and horizon graphs--are generally more efficient for comparisons across time series with a large visual span. On the other hand, shared-space techniques--like standard line graphs--are typically more efficient for comparisons over smaller visual spans where the impact of overlap and clutter is reduced.

In this IEEE PacificVis 2010 presentation, we introduce a method for supporting multi-focus interaction in time-series datasets that we call stack zooming. The approach is based on the user interactively building hierarchies of 1D strips stacked on top of each other, where each subsequent stack represents a higher zoom level, and sibling strips represent branches in the visual exploration. Correlation graphics show the relation between stacks and strips of different levels, providing context and distance awareness among the focus points.

Motion constraints providing guidance for 3D navigation have recently been suggested as a way of offloading some of the cognitive effort of traversing complex 3D environments on a computer. We present findings from an evaluation of the benefits of this practice where users achieved significantly better results in memory recall and performance when given access to such a guidance method. The study was conducted on both standard desktop computers with mouse and keyboard, as well as on an immersive CAVE system. Interestingly, our results also show that the improvements were more dramatic for desktop users than for CAVE users, even outperforming the latter. Furthermore, the study indicates that allowing the users to retain local control over the navigation on the desktop platform helps them in familiarizing themselves with the 3D world.
