This slide deck discusses a workshop on prototyping web-based and mobile apps to support informal learning. It introduces SeViAnno, a semantic video annotation tool that can capture and share meaning in communities of practice. Workshop participants explored SeViAnno prototypes and designed mockups for using semantic video annotation to scaffold informal workplace learning for construction workers. Their designs aimed to address the problem of information transfer faced by a construction foreman persona.

Semantic Video Annotation
(SeViAnno)
Aims at capturing and sharing meaning
– In communities of practice
– For personal use
Example
– Markup of text for learning (different colors, etc.)
Different kinds of semantic annotations:
– Descriptive (search & locate, e.g. keywords, description)
– Technical/administrative (internal info, e.g. creation, type)
– Structural (storage & presentation, e.g. video segments)

Persona
Dimitri - The Construction Foreman
Rarely gets the chance to physically meet up with colleagues and
exchange ideas or self-proven techniques
Mostly he is in contact with the site manager over his mobile device
“It would be easier to have information stored in a notebook and
have that all around when you need it. The site manager you
almost never see, because he hangs out somewhere else while
we’re at site in a different city. And then the others are hard to reach
too.”
His smartphone is his most precious work learning device, as
quick calls, pictures, videos, etc. enable him to get the information as
fast as possible
He is fast annoyed if the interface and the usability of a new
program or app is not suitable
Daily activities don’t allow the time to actively get involved in
learning (e.g. in a proposed information forum)

Task 3
Design Mockups
Problem:
How to support informal learning with scaffolding to bridge
apprenticeship and workplace learning using (mobile)
semantic video annotation technology?
Solution [20’]:
– Your story and ideas
– User interface mockups, paper prototypes
Present your solutions [3-5’ each]
