                                        Introduction

                   - FTS are important not only by itself due to the
large contribution of foreign trade to the
national economy, but also to measure the
various indicators of sectors dependent on
foreign trade such as fishery, manufacturing,
                       construction and others.

                                   Current Practices

                   - The Task
                         – Immediate task is to set up an operational
                           database as per user’s requirements.
                         – To produce the following tables monthly and to
                           cater the routine publications:-
                            - Export and Import data by BEC

                            - Export and Import data by CPC sections

                              Automation
                         – database is handled in Corel Paradox format.
                         – The tables are stored in Excel workbook.

                                          Problems

                 - For the data collectors the public revenue is utmost
priority, while statistics is the by-product.
                 - Frequent changes in the coding system leads to the
                     revision of the published statistics.
                 - As a result of major changes in the coding systems
from year to year data is not caparison.

                                       Actions Taken

                     - Had meetings with the customs staff and
explained the ways and needs from the point
                         of view of statisticians.
                     - The customs staff is to provide the bridge to
convert the old coding system to the new,
upon all changes in the coding system.
                     - To minimize minor frequent changes in the
                         classification.

                                                                                         5
