2. UNSD/UNESCAP Workshop on Trade Statistics for the Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and
Small Island Developing Countries (SIDCs)
Bangkok, 25-28 March 2003
Introduction
- FTS are important not only by itself due to the
large contribution of foreign trade to the
national economy, but also to measure the
various indicators of sectors dependent on
foreign trade such as fishery, manufacturing,
construction and others.
Current Practices
- Data Source
– Import and Export databases are
downloaded through intranet from the
Maldives Customs Services on a monthly
basis
– Export dbase is available in a one month
lag period and the Import dbase in one and
a half month lag, routinely.

5. UNSD/UNESCAP Workshop on Trade Statistics for the Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and
Small Island Developing Countries (SIDCs)
Bangkok, 25-28 March 2003
Problems
- For the data collectors the public revenue is utmost
priority, while statistics is the by-product.
- Frequent changes in the coding system leads to the
revision of the published statistics.
- As a result of major changes in the coding systems
from year to year data is not caparison.
Actions Taken
- Had meetings with the customs staff and
explained the ways and needs from the point
of view of statisticians.
- The customs staff is to provide the bridge to
convert the old coding system to the new,
upon all changes in the coding system.
- To minimize minor frequent changes in the
classification.
