Class 2.8 of the PDC+++ ¿How do we evaluate our designs? Design is a continuous process, so being able to see whether a project is moving in the right direction & accurately evaluating progress, being able & ready to re-direct resources & efforts in order to respond creatively to surrounding co-designs & changing circumstances ... is an essential part of the whole.  In this class we look at how to develop these crucial skills & explore some of the tools we use for creating flexibly with complex & ever-changing Life forces.

1. United Nations, Bruntdland Commission Sustainable development is that which satisfies the needs of the present without affecting the capacity of future generations to satisfy their needs. It has two key concepts: a) the concept of " needs ", in particular the basic needs of the world's poor, to which we have to give priority & b) The idea of “ limits " imposed by the state of the technology & social organization over the capacity of the environment to satisfy the needs of the present & the future.  ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]
4.  Bill Mollison, Designers' Manual A system is sustainable when it creates / stores  more energy / matter in its lifetime than that which it needs  to create & maintain it. A sustainable system produces all the energy & resource it needs for its maintenance & growth.  What is left over is "the yield".  ,[object Object],[object Object]

They're not going to care how you or I lived our lives.  They're not going to care  how hard we tried.  They're not going to care whether we were nice people.  They're not going to care whether we were nonviolent or violent.  They're not going to care whether we grieved the murder of the planet.  They're not going to care whether we were enlightened or not.  They're not going to care what sort of excuses we had to not act (eg. "I'm too stressed to think about it, " or "It's too big & scary, " or "I'm too busy, " or "But those in power will kill us if we effectively act against them," or "If we fight back, we run the risk of becoming like they are," or "But I recycled," or any of a thousand other excuses we've all heard too many times).  They're not going to care how simply we lived.  They're not going to care how pure we were in thought or action.  They're not going to care if we became the change we wished to see.  They're not going to care whether we had "compassion" for the CEOs & politicians running this deathly economy. They're going to care whether they can breathe the air & drink the water.   • 1. Class 2.8 of the PDC+++ ¿How do we evaluate our designs? Design is a continuous process, so being able to see whether a project is moving in the right direction & accurately evaluating progress, being able & ready to re-direct resources & efforts in order to respond creatively to surrounding co-designs & changing circumstances ... is an essential part of the whole. In this class we look at how to develop these crucial skills & explore some of the tools we use for creating flexibly with complex & ever-changing Life forces.

"I'm too stressed to think about it, " or "It's too big & scary, " or "I'm too busy, " or "But those in power will kill us if we effectively act against them," or "If we fight back, we run the risk of becoming like they are," or "But I recycled," or any of a thousand other excuses we've all heard too many times). They're not going to care how simply we lived. They're not going to care how pure we were in thought or action. They're not going to care if we became the change we wished to see. They're not going to care whether we had "compassion" for the CEOs & politicians running this deathly economy. They're going to care whether they can breathe the air & drink the water.
