3. SUPERNATURAL HORRORS
Supernatural horrors are the most common within the
horror genre these typically include
ghosts, monsters, dark forces, zombies, or pretty
much anything which people fear. It is also very
common for supernatural horrors to be about
possessions and evil spirits taking over the body.

4. PSYCHOLOGICAL HORROR
Psychological horrors are another one of the most
common within the horror genre, they are more
driven by characters fears and focused more on
psychological dread than on murder, mutilation, and
gore, this could be supernatural, but is more often
associated with those twists where the protagonist
turns out to be insane. The most popular
psychological horrors are:-

5. SATANIC/RELIGIOUS/OCCULT
This genre of horror is often derived from certain
belief systems and the evil aspects that they fight
against. Usually involves demonic
possessions, exorcisms, or explorations of the
darker side of pagan religions and the use of ”left
hand” magic. The Exorcist is a stand-out example
as well as it being a psychological horror. The
exorcist is a 1973 American horror film and deals
with the demonic possession of a young girl and
her mother's desperate attempts to win back her
daughter through an exorcism conducted by two
priests.
6. SPLATTER PUNK
Splatter punk is the horror extreme, with graphic and
gory violence intended to scare and creep you
out, it includes torture porn category and this is the
most prominent in movies like Hostel and Saw.
Hostel is a American horror where college students
go on a trip and are enticed to stay In a hostel
where they are later captured and tortured.
7. SCI-FI HORROR
Sci-fi horror is a mash-up of science fiction and
horror, usually where the science fiction aspects
such as aliens, robots, space travel are used to
precipitate the overriding horror, just like in the
movie Alien. Alien is a 1979 science fiction horror
film, the film's title refers to its primary antagonist
who is a highly aggressive extraterrestrial creature
that stalks and kills the crew of a spaceship.
8. THRILLER
Thriller films don't have as many sub genres as horror
does, this is due to some films being multi genre so
it is harder to pin point specific sub genres. The
main ones are:
Action thriller
Horror thriller
Psychological thriller
Crime thriller
9. ACTION THRILLER
Action thriller films are a mix of action packed chase
scenes, fighting and shooting as well as a sense of
suspension. Some of the most popular action
thrillers are:-

Horror thrillers are a collaboration of the two
genres, often these contain a sense of gore or
supernatural experiences as well as a underlying
storyline full of action and chase scenes. The most

Psychological thriller is a specific sub-genre of the
broad ranged thriller with heavy focus on the
unstable emotional states of characters, in
combination with mystery and thriller. However, it
often incorporates elements from
the mystery and drama genre, along with the typical
traits of the thriller genre. The most popular films of

12. CRIME THRILLER
The crime thriller genre is similar to the action thriller
genre as in action thriller often a crime is committed
in order for there to be action. Some of the most

13. SUMMARY
Overall it is clear the genres of horror and thriller have
many sub genres within them as they are such a huge
genre.
Each genre is very wide and has potential for many
different diverse films within them.
I will take this into account when choosing my genre of
media package, I will not only choose the overall genre I
will choose a sub genre too or collaborate two sub
genres together.
From this research into sub genres I have understood
that a genre has more depth to it than what is on the
face value. I will use this knowledge to ensure I select
the correct genre for my media package.
