2. IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT USE,
DEVELOP OR CHALLENGE FORMS AND CONVENTIONS
OF REAL MEDIA PRODUCTS?
3. GOODWIN‟S THEORY
Well, what are the forms and conventions of real media products? According to Goodwin,
there are 7 of these which are always included in a music video.
The first is ensuring that a music video always enhances the understanding of the songs
lyrics.
The second is ensuring that there is a relationship between the music and the visuals.
Third is incorporating the video style and characteristics of its particular genre.
Fourth, incorporating the demands of the record label into the music video.
Fifth, intertextual references.
Sixth, reference to voyeurism
Seventh, an artists motifs.
4. Here in Usher‟s „Daddy‟s Home‟ music
video, the lyrics during this scene are –
“Tonight we‟re going to do a lot of
sexing”, therefore this scene is
enhancing the lyrics because it suggests
that sexual activity is about to take
place.
I used some Goodwin‟s attributes in my music video.
Here in my music video, Rihanna‟s
„Farewell‟, the lyrics during this scene
are – “Somebody‟s going to miss you.”
The facial expression on the girl
emotively enhances the lyrics, therefore
creating a relationship between the
lyrics and the visuals.
5. Here, in Delilah‟s „Breathe‟, there is a
relationship between the music and
visuals. The music video is edited to
the slow melody of the song. She also
incorporates conventions of a typical
R&B music video – that is, it is based
on a couple, there are intimate scenes
and it follows a narrative.
In my music video I conformed to R&B characteristics such as this. My music video had a main
narrative aspect to it and there were intimate scenes within it.
6. I used mild forms of voyeurism in my music video because attractive females attract wider audiences. This is
also a main characteristic in R&B music videos. Close-up shots of artists and voyeuristic shots the female body
are very often used in R&B videos.
Examples of both these
characteristics in R&B videos.
Rihanna‟s „You Da One
Leona Lewis‟ „Better in Time‟
7. In real R&B music videos that are both performance and
narrative based like mine, there are a number of locations
used. As well as lengthy bits of performance, despite there
being a narrative storyline to it. In my music video, I
failed to use multiple locations and I challenged real music
video norms in that the performance based bit of my music
video isn’t as long as most. To make up for its lack of
performance from the artist, I used cameos of the artist
instead – cameo’s of the artist in thought and expressing
emotion, which aimed to enhance the feel of the video. It is,
however, a usual convention for R&B music videos to show
cameos and still shots of its artist. This ties into Dyer’s
star theory. These still shots of the artists can be used as
an artist trying to pull themselves away from the superstar
performance of the music video and show their audience that
they’re just normal people too, feeling just as they are
about the song/video. Therefore, this would present the
artist, as Dyer said, as being both ordinary and
extraordinary.
8. Because I was unable to
film as much performance
shots as was needed, I
used many cameos of the
artist in my music video
instead.
A cameo role or cameo
appearance is a brief
appearance of a known
person in a work of the
performing arts, appearing
as themselves. These
roles are generally small,
many of them non-
speaking ones doing
something, expressing an
emotion or simply just
stopping to be noticed by
the audience.

10. This is my music album cover. I too, have
specified the
title of my
album
A picture of Rihanna,
the artist.
I have used Rihanna‟s motif/symbol
rather than her actual name. I have
done this because that motif fits in
better with the overall design and
Rihanna is an established enough
artist for an audience to recognize her
face and motif alone (as opposed to
needing to specify her name too.)

14. HOW EFFECTIVE IS THE COMBINATION OF YOUR
MAIN PRODUCT AND ANCILLARY TEXTS?
16. • Once I‟d finished my music video, I kept in mind how I‟d presented my artist within the music
video and what kind of song I‟d used. This information would be crucial because I‟d have to
present her as the same or close too that persona with my ancillary tasks. I kept to my own
type of house-style.
17. HOUSE STYLE IS “IS A SET OF STANDARDS FOR THE WRITING AND DESIGN OF
DOCUMENTS, EITHER FOR GENERAL USE OR FOR A SPECIFIC PUBLICATION,
ORGANIZATION OR FIELD.”
18. After researching into how real media products
combine album covers and music videos, I
realised that they don‟t. With Album covers, the
image usually represents an artists personality
or directly links to the title of the album. There
are too many songs on an album to directly link
it to one music video.
In this Taylor Swift music video, you
can immediately see that her front
cover and music video and related.
However, it was a single, not an
album which is why both products
are so closely combined.
26. I used Microsoft PowerPoint to create my evaluation
presentation. PowerPoint allowed me to easily organize
my analysis of my coursework onto presentation slides.
I used Microsoft Word to arrange my screenshots and
preview pictures that would be used in my evaluation and
on my blog.
I used Blogger continuously throughout my coursework. I
used it for my research, planning and evaluating stages to
simply post my findings as I went along.
27. Prezi allowed me to present final my ideas for my
evaluation on a virtual canvas.
I used Facebook to receive feedback about my media
products. It allowed me to post my finished products online
and let people comment on what they thought of it. I also
used it for primary research. I was able to post
questionnaires on it and have people directly answer them.
I used Twitter to receive feedback about my media
products. It allowed me to post my finished products
online and let people comment on what they thought of it.
