2. What is R22?
• R22 is a GAS also known as HCFC-22,
Chlorodifluoromethane or
Difluoromonochloromethane.
• It is a colourless Hydrochlorofluorocarbon
(HCFC).
• Hydrochlorofluorocarbons are large groups of
compounds which are similar to
Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) but have one or
more Hydrogen atoms.

3. Why is R22 used in Air Conditioning
Systems?
• R22 is a refrigerant gas used in
cooling systems like air conditioners.
• They carry heat that changes from
gas to liquid and back to gas in the
refrigeration cycle.

4. Why is R22 being Outlawed?
• According to studies R22 is
harmful to the earth’s ozone layer.
• This can increase UV levels which
can be damaging to our health.

5. When does the ban come into place?
• European Commission regulations
have outlawed R22 from 1st January
2015.
• It will become illegal for any air
conditioning provider or maintenance
service to provide systems which use
R22 as a refrigerant gas.

6. What should I do with my R22 Air
Conditioning System?
• Replace your air conditioning system as soon
as possible if it uses R22.
• This makes life easier for your maintenance
and service team while ensuring that your
company complies fully with the law.
• Modern Air Conditioning systems are also
more efficient and can therefore save
electricity and money in the process, as well
as being better for the environment.
