Though 57, Vinita Patil puts her best face forward at work. “I have to com
pete with girls fresh out of college,“ says Patil, one of three employees aged
over 50 working in a South Mumbai multinational where the average age is
25. Patil's self assurance received a shot in the arm -or face, in this case -
after Botox sessions to relax lines around her eyes and mouth, laser peels to
reduce pigmentation and derma fillers to plump her cheeks and under-eye
region. The demographic profile of those getting cosmetic procedures is
changing, say experts. In order to compete with younger co-workers, a
growing number of seniors are attempting to improve their professional luck
with a little nip-and-tuck. Dr Apratim Goel, a Mumbai dermatologist who
treated Patil, says he regularly get clients who want to undergo cosmetic
treatments because “they want to be perceived as youthful at the
workplace“.

Dr Mohan Thomas, cosmetic surgeon at the Cosmetic Surgery Institute
in Mumbai, states the biggest jump in clients in the last two years has
been those aged between 50 and 60. “A lot of older people these days
are not apologetic about spending on their looks to improve their
careers,“ he says. That the corporate world no longer looks kindly on
greying hair is a reality even human greying hair is a reality even human
resource professionals have come to terms with.“Older employees are
trying hard to fit in the model of beauty and energy set by their much
younger co-workers,“ admits Nirmala Menon, a HR expert and head of
Bangalore-based Interweave Consultancy .

Mumbai-based sales and marketing executive Tuhina Pal, 54, believes regular
shots of Botox and fillers helped her land a promotion last year. “Earlier,
younger co-workers would make veiled ageist comments like `Have you not
slept properly? `Why do you look so tired?' `Do you want help with this
meeting?' It made me feel insecure,“ she claims.
Dr. Goel says older professionals, or those wanting to start second careers
after retirement, opt for skin brightening and tightening procedures as facial
pigmentation is one of the first signs of ageing. Hair transplants costing up to
Rs 1 lakh, surgical facelifts at Rs. 30-50,000 and Botox (Rs. 5,000 per shot) are
other popular treatments. At Dr. Manoj Khanna's clinic in Delhi, 25% of the
clients are aged over 40. “Liposuction is the most desired treatment amongst
women who are post menopausal while ageing men want hair transplants,“
he says.

Dr Thomas recalls how a client, a 70-year old well-known builder from
Mumbai, who was locked in a dispute with his son and isolated by
others in the office, took recourse to a hair transplant and face lift.
“Things changed at work. His team started listening to him again, and
some of his immediate staff that had moved to his son's camp came
back to him,“ says Dr Thomas. A wealthy 65-year-old sugarcane farmer
from Satara district, Maharashtra who had a face-lift before contesting
local panchayat elections and an 82-year-old Mum bai pastor who
underwent a hair transplant to look and feel more confident at his work
are other examples of how going under the examples of how going
under the knife helped elders make the cut.

Not everyone's raving about renewal, though. An advocate of ageing
gracefully, Mumbai-based gerontologist, Dr Amruta Lovekar feels the
current obsession with looking younger is unhealthy. “People should be
comfortable getting and looking old,“ says Lovekar. But in an ageist
world, not many seem to be taking this advice.
